    Richie Havens January 21, 1941--April 22, 2013 (72 years old)

    Woodstock, 1969
"As the festival's first performer, he held the crowd for nearly
three hours (in part because he was told to perform a lengthy set
because many artists were delayed in reaching the festival loca-
tion), and was called back for several encores. Having run out of
tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual "Motherless
Child" that became "Freedom". The subsequent Woodstock movie re-
lease helped Havens reach a worldwide audience.

I saw and heard him perform at Woodstock. He regularly played smaller venues in NYC. I believe he opened for some bigger folkstar when I first saw him. This past year I thought it would be nice to see him again. I can't explain it but he projected a nice, warm feeling.

I was 13 when I saw the movie of woodstock. This was so impressive to me as a boy. I thought if we could just have what he was singing in that song we could all be happy. And being a white kid I thought it was a slave anthem! Still gives me shivers. He did a wonderful version of If Not For You.
