Kneeling before the altar in Vatican Square the new Pope along with some younger men kissed the cloth as the ceremony began to install hundreds of new Saints for the Catholic Faithful. Included in this group were 813 Catholics beheaded in 1480 by the Turks who wanted them to convert to Islam. Several Nuns were Sainted for there nursing and teaching work. These selections were made by the prior Pope and Francis I is carrying out the official ceremony.
Francis I has called for more open dialogue with Muslims so the reaction to recognizing those killed by the Muslims is in question. Pope Benedict was seen as a little insensitive to Muslim feelings.
The missionary work of the Nuns and Priests from Mexico and South America who were Sainted also raisies some questions about how the converted were left to deal with their former beliefs and culture.
Francis I then rode in the popemobile to greet and shake hands with the 60,000 who showed up for the Catholic version of the FDS.
