Oriental | |||
Something or someone hailing from the Orient. Absolutely NOT an offensive term, only considered so by the uptight, ultrasensitive PC crowd in America. In Europe, the term is widely used without any connotations of insult. Using "Asian" for a people within the continent of Asia is selfish and self-serving to undermine other non-Oriental people. |
What do you think about this definition of Oriental at the Urban Dictionary?

We use Asian in Australia. It's considered archaic and a bit ignorant to use oriental. You just never hear it used. The continent is called Asia, Asia is where the people come from, so we describe them as Asians and their cultures as Asian. To be more specific we could say south east Asia, northern Asia, central Asia, or to be more specific again we say Chinese, Koreans, Thais, Uzbeks, Indonesians etc. To know precisely where the people to whom you're referring come from and call them by their nationality is far lore polite than calling them an Oriental.

Just a term for something or someone from the east.
It's the opposite of "occidental" meaning from the west.
No biggie.
