new light = redefining meanings while retaining concepts and JW language

I thought of this during another thread.

Major changes in the doctrine by dropping old ideas would seem too obvious. As in the past the WTS just "redefines" all the old terms. The same way "Generation" has been redefined allowing the WTS to maintain its favorite "generation of 1914" theory, the last days are now being redefined. The old - "taking from one shoulder and moving it to the other shoulder" trick

    LAST DAYS

the definition of last days has been redefined to have "dispensations" (theres a WTS favorite), that is....

1 - 1914 = enthronement of JC, beginning of the harvest, appointment of F&DS over domestics
2 - uknown period of harvest leading to the Great Tribulation signifying JC arriving as "Judge" to judge the sheep & the goats, and the appointment of the F&DS over "all his belongings",
4 - unknown period of time for judging leading to the rapture of annointed ones
5 - unknown period of time after rapture until Armageddon

Hence the WTS can keep using their favorite words - "last days", "harvest", "Great Tribulation" along with all the familiarity they have in the ears of JW's who then say.... "not much has changed really..."

    F&DS

the faithful and discreet slave has been redefined to exclude unnecessary and bothersome "anointed"

1 - F&DS used to be all 144,000 who have ever lived and are presently alive.
2 - these went back all the way to Pentecost 33CE
3 - these ALL provided food at the proper time
4 - today the F&DS is solely the GB as a group. This dismisses the signigance of Ray Franz' apostasy since as an individual he was not a member of the F&DS. This paves the way for dismissing future GB dissenters (one in the works???)

this allows the WTS to continue using this term as they always have along with all its nostalgic familiarity. This even keep old publications "up to date" in many ways by the term simply being anachronistically applied to the new 2013 definition of F&DS

    DOMESTICS

domestics used to be comprised of only anointed. Who else could it be since the Greek scriptures are writton on to the anointed right? Well now Jehovah is actually speaking directly to us lowly other sheep in Matt 25:45 and we are being told to LISTEN TO THE GOVERNING BODY! Of course all anointed are also being given this clear direction... YOU MUST OBEY THE GOVERNING BODY.

Now instead of the R&F being put off by this, they somehow feel privileged! what a great spark of joy the GB has lovingly allowed the other sheep to partake of. "do we not consider it all joy to be a part of JC's domestics??" (audience applaudes)

    GENERATION

let's skip all of the other generation definitions and focus on the only one anybody ever cared about.. that is the "Generation of 1914 will by no means pass away until all these things occur"

everybody loved this one, for 50 years we preached it. It was our hallmark, our mantra! Then in 1915 we turned a page in the WT and POOF! It was gone.
Yet earliy it remained, not only in the vernacular of the R&F ("you know the generation of 1914 is dwindling") but even in the publications (Reasoning Book to this day still defines the Generation as that of 1914 not passing away)

Despite yet another definition the R&F all yearned for the good ol' 1914 Generation.. those were such good years!!
So after the WTS went back in time to the 144k generation, they went back in time again to that good old 1914 generation. How did they do this?
THEY REDEFINED WHAT GENERATION MEANS!! Yes, now the good old generation of 1914 is back and the Reasoning book is actually up to date again. (Good thing they didn't reprint it in 1995 & 2007 eh?) yes the generation of 1914 will by no means pass away until all these things occur! Just realize that "generation" is and unending duration of overlappiing lifetimes!

So now we can use all our favorite buzz words! "Generation of 1914 by no means pass away", "this generation", "last days", "F&DS", "Domestics", "Great Tribulation", "Sheep & Goats", "Armageddon"... etc.

Then when us "apostates" or just liberal thinkers ask questions and when the R&F read the new WT's and hear all the new talks they will say... "well that's not really anything new, we kind'of already always beleived that anyway"

How many years has the GB been working on this? No doubt the underpinnings of these changes have been discussed at the GB Round Table for decades. I am certain of it! But over the past 10 year or so, these changes have been bubbling below the surface awaiting the right time to poke through.

I am still of course curious about the brief return of Generation = 144k for just 1.5 years and then too overlapping generations that saw 1914. Who died in 2008 to tip the scales on that 2/3's vote???? Just kidding, it must have been New Light from Jehovah's holy spirit ;)

Redefinitions are certainly one type of "new light".

There are other types, such as flip-flopping on whether various people will be resurrected, whether organ transplants are cannibalism or acceptable medical procedures, when the 6000 years of human existence ended, whether the Great Pyramid was God's stone witness or something devised by Satan, etc.

I don't get "new light" as a concept. They use Prov 4:18 for this, but nowhere in that verse does it say the light will be new or newer. I could understand if they said "brighter light", but "new light"? Someone recently said to me about the FDS change that everything else is "old light". I laughed and said: do you know how ridiculous that sounds? How can light be old?

They've built themselves on a shaky foundation which is not solid. Instead of fixing it they redecorate the house, hoping averyone will be blindsited by their appearance.

wallsofjericho, Redefining words is a definite hallmark of a cult!

    Great analysis in the OP!

    good analogy

I am always amazed at how no matter how much changes it somehow always seems like its just a slight shift.

Like when fractions were a big deal in 2006 we were referencing articles from 2001 and back to 1983 ! all of a sudden fractions had been a conscience decision for 25 years but nobody had ever realized it?

and when they dropped 1935 closing of the call it was just a breif little snipped in a KM. "oh well, we don't beleive that anymore". No one cared.

The R&F treat the "change" as a small and minor but never think to ask why we had it wrong for so long? Or don't consider how these minor changes added up over years amount to large shifts in doctrine.

The R&F will also defend the GB by saying "they are imperfect" or "they aren't inspired" but when you ask them how they get their information they say they are "guided by Holy Spirit".
Well what does that mean? are they inspired or aren't they? why does being imperfect have any bearing? is it that their imperfection causes them to misunderstand Jehovah's guidance? Why does HS allow that for decades at a time? If they are a channel for truth why do they get so much wrong?
Ultimately who's fault is it that they got "light" wrong? Did the HS lie or did the GB, in all their fleshly imperfection, surmize a "truth" from the scriptures without the help or guidance of Holy Spirit and just got it all wong? If that is what happened then when does HS really ever play a part? What else is wrong?

Even though the GB admits in print they determine teachings based on "current events amd the study and prayerful mediation of the inspired scriptures" no JW will come out and say just that..... that the GB are just figuring things out as they go along and the HS has nothing to do with it!
