I had an idea that may solve the problems in the Middle East. The idea is a little extreme and may have some negative effects in the short term. But before you get all sensitive and yell “You right-wing, inbred nazi bastard!” carefully consider the LONG-TERM benefits both for world peace and for the average person living in the Middle East. Here I go…
First, we secretly drill several massive tunnels deep underground to the Middle East oil fields from a friendly area relatively near by, perhaps some British colony or a puppet government that will keep it's mouth shut for some money. We've got our oil. Then we pull out our troops and our diplomats from the whole region including Israel. Many groups and many people in the Middle East will always hate us but without anything American right in their face, and if history is any indication, focus will shift away from us and to more immediate and more conventional military actions. They'll fight Israel and fight each other. Israel can hold it's own without us, we've sold them all the best equipment after all and their training is very professional. Without all the money they get from selling us oil, the governments of the Middle East won't have the money to buy all the guns and ammo they need to kill each other. So we offer to sell them the arms on something like the lend-lease agreement of WWII. Slowly but inevitably the U.S. and her allies will own massive amounts of land in the Middle East. American business will follow in the wake of property ownership and eventually control nearly all commerce in the region. At the same time the militaries and governments of the Middle East become ever more weak from all the fighting. When the experts deem that the situation is ripe, U.S. government and American business effectively takes over all political and economic control remaining in most of the Middle East countries. The US armed forces will necessarily be deployed to protect American interests. In their weakened state, the governments and militaries will be helpless to resists the take over. In 10 to 15 years from the implementation of the plan, most of the Middle East becomes a protectorate of the US and her allies, it's foreign and domestic policies, it's governments and it's militaries heavily subject to influence and oversight of the Western World.
