  I enjoyed so much his hard sf books. His insight was amazing.

  Seems like he was a great character. He came from my hometown and was a staunch supporter of independence.

  But I couldn't get into his books. I tried to read The Player of Games and The Wasp Factory but could finish neither.

  I think those are his less readable books. Consider phlebus and use of weapons are better, imo. Basically the culture series is better, imo.

  The Player of Games is a culture novel. Use of Weapons is meants to be his best. I might give it a go. My wife read them all. She says they are very dark and nasty in places.

  It's a real shame they were never made into SF movies.
