Heard from a friend living on the East Coast (U.S.) that bethel is starting to crack down on obesity. They are sending bethlites for mandatory physicals and if your BMI is high they make you go on a diet. According to my friend, this person told him that he knows of a bethel brother who was flat out told he was "fat!"

I feel that they will begin to address this soon with elders and I am sure that they already are bugging CO's and DO's. I for one am not surprised by this since obesity is a growing problem especially in the U.S and is a leading cause of premature death. They ban drug use and cigs already.

That being said I do fully understand and appreciate that many factors go into a person's size namely DNA, bad metabolism, depression, medications that cause you to gain weight, etc. At any rate I am just curious if anyone else noticed or heard of this and also what are your thoughts on it.

I notice when people talk of this matter they overlook the obvious .... eating to much...

I have a few friends who want to lose weight .. I've lost 50 pounds .. when They ask me .. and I say it's about eating less.... portion control ..

they say no no I just need to join a gym ... or what ever ..

that being said other than a few medical conditions ... over eating is the cause of being overweight... period...

by the way I lost 50 after quiting smoking by eating 6 small meal 3 to 4 hours apart ... always a little hungry never too full..

I'm type 2 diabetic .. which forced me into this diet

Tater I agree with you, but I want to be fair also and other things can cause weight gain even though eating less is ultimately the solution.

Well, those GB some of those GB members are a little portly aren't they?

My Dr only encourages exercise in moderation, and big on calorie control. For instance, if it takes you 2 hrs to work off a piece of cake, you're better off to not have the piece of cake.

I know but it's rare.. and I just drive this point because everyone I talk to about it wants to avoid the obvious solution.....

What are you eating ... How much are you eating ... How often are you eating..

If you honestly answer these questions .. you will win..

example : depression making me gain weight.. no.. depression making you eat to much ..

They have been hammering COs to stay thin & fit for many years now.

New CO candidiates are disqualified if CO or wife are anyway near overweight.

Healthcare costs are skyrocketing. It's all about the $$$$.

When I visited Bethel years ago, I enjoyed the large portions that were served. If it wasn't for the hard work and the youth they have, many of the Bethelites would be obese. When I was young, I ate everything without gaining weight. Now I look at food and gain weight. Of course eating large portions or the wrong kind of diet can contribute to being obese. But I do know of ones because of genetic family traits that were obese inspite of living a correct lifestyle.

To be fair, even my health insurance company is really promoting healthly lifestyles. So it is not just Bethel.
