WHAT IS DEATH ACCORDING TO THE " SCRIPTURES?"

What is the soul according to God's word? The accurate identity of the " soul " will aid in the understanding of what " death " is. I used to think I knew the answers, now I do not.

Some say that if the soul is immortal, that would show a disrespect for the ransom. We demean Christ's death if we have an immortal soul. Really? According to the bible, haven't we been given that gift precisely because of Christ's death? What about pre-christian people like Abraham? YHWH is the God of the living, not the dead. Paul said that some would not see death. He likened death to planting a seed. A seed that bears fruit is not really dead, otherwise a tree would not grow. Paul used that as an analogy. Also, Christ said that death was " sleep." Are you dead when you sleep?

I am just thinking aloud, and wondering about your thoughts. I really just don't know what to believe some days. Maybe most of it doesn't even matter...

ok just thinking aloud..what is existence? The only exixtence is future existence....so what is death? future existence of past existence?..but not sure what the scriptures say? i guess they make more sence than my humble observation.

Data Dong...i think this post deserves more than my above comment 5 months ago.

To comment on your comment about sleep.

When we sleep i think its another form of existence...

When i slept as a child i dreamt events in the future that came true...

New Hope - Totally agree. I have been lokking into this for the last day and the subject of the use of the numerous words that mean death, dead, or die along with the other greek words which the scholars of past years have diffined that imply death due to their infered context of the text does make the whole topic a mine field.

Data dog is correct about his assocoation of death with the soul, however the breath of the soul and the wind of the spirit are in themselves very much in need of the same debate. As the topic/subject becomes so vast it is not surpiring that people do not wish to enter into it, due to either their lack of knowledge or their understanding of the size of the task.

I will try and come back tomorrow with some basics if I can get my head round the whole thing, what a great topic.
