It's easy to lay blame and be critical of the parents but we don't know all the facts so let's put blame where it deserves: the creep who did this.

Released from jail 3 weeks ago. Keep child molesters in jail and throw away the key.

WE`ve had this blame the victim conversation on the rape thread. Yes, the mother should have used better judgement. But who knows what really happened? This article seems to imply that the creep told them he was with social services and that they were under investigation.

These guys should not be out on the street trolling for thier next victims. Very sad.

This is such a horrendous tragedy. Rather than lashing out, I'd hope people will find ways to try to comfort this poor mother.

Laverite, I doubt there is any comfort to be had for this poor mother.

Nearly in tears reading this, and I don't cry easily.. Anyway, Mamochan, sorry to correct you (not trying to sound clever or anything, especially not on a topic like this), but from reading your link, he pretended to be a social worker in his previous offense, not this time. My guess is that the mother is a kind and trusting sort, and this %*@#* pretended to be a nice friendly guy who just wanted to buy a snack or whatever for the child, and she would meet them there in a minute when the mother had paid for/packed the shopping, perhaps. Try to imagine the scenario, rather than just say 'how stupid..' . There are still some naive, trusting people in this world, fortunately or unfortunately. The poor woman is going to feel worse than anything we can imagine...

Yes, the people who do this are unlikely to be 'obvious creeps' like we sometimes see on TV shows. They will likely be smooth and charming and convincing. Someone was fooled and I'm sure they will struggle with the consequences for the rest of their life. They need support, not blame. Someone else needs a bullet.

UPDATE: Initial reports suggested that Charish Perriwinkle's mother allowed her daughter to go to McDonald's with Donald James Smith. The mother has now told Action News Jax that she did not realize Smith left with the girl.

The girl's mother, Rayne Perriwinkle, told Action News Jax that she and her daughter met Smith Friday evening at a dollar store. Her two other children, ages 4 and 5, were also with her, according to Jacksonville.com.

Smith overheard the mother saying she couldn't afford to buy her daughter a dress, and offered to help her out. She says Smith told her his wife had a Walmart gift card, and could meet them at Walmart and use the card to buy items for the family.

Once there, Perriwinkle says Smith kept insisting they were waiting for his wife. At one point, he said he was heading to the store's McDonald's. The mother says she did not realize her daughter was going with him.

"He asked if I wanted anything and I heard Cherish say 'cheeseburger.' I thought she stayed near me. I didn't realize she went with him. I didn't let her go with him like people think," the mother told the station.
