The US Navy is now the assignee for a LENR ("Cold Fusion") patent. A patent does not prove a new technology is real - by itself - but the surrounding details strongly suggest to me that the US Navy is serious about this matter and may be looking for a new powerplant technology.

The scientists involved in the patent development are well experienced and deeply knowledgeable in their fields (such as Pamela Boss). Some have suggested that experts in electrochemistry may be more favorably inclined towards "Cold Fusion" than mainstream physicists. There is also serious criticism that the term "Cold Fusion" should be abandoned in favor of some other term.

In any case, if the technology is real and can be made practical - everything changes.....

Interesting, although I noticed the filing date on the patent was in Sept 2007 (!). So this patent being awarded is not exactly proof of SPAWAR's current activity working on cold fusion, as the opening paragraph seems to claim:

"The rumors of the demise of the US Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command or SPAWAR’s low energy nuclear reaction research program appear to be greatly exaggerated. The research organization is not only still actively working on cold fusion, it’s been granted an LENR patent."

IS it really taking THAT long to get a patent these days? Wow, USPTO must be swamped....

This looks like some kind of metal plating technology to me. The power mentioned is 500/1000000 amp. That's about 1/40000 of what's in the socket on your wall.

Yup, little effects so far - that critics can still dispute. We need something big to start the revolution.

What makes you think they will share ? The us military is not there to protect the lay people. The people are only the fodder for wars that other people create.

The patent office is really careful about patenting some devices that look like they are bogus. I would think that there was a lot of 'back and forth' between the patent office and the original patent submitter (or the patent lawyer). Hence the long time to get a patent.

Some claim that there are 4 - 5 thousand patents classified as secret, so yeah, the government tries to keep things away from the public.
