    I spend some time exploring Youtube. There's a huge amount of rubbish, but some really useful stuff, both sociological and academic.

    What I've suddenly noticed is really interesting from a sociological aspect - a nostalgia for the vanished Soviet Union;

    As in these videos:

    Well what do you expect? I did at least aim to be an egalitarian society.

    When things were bad in the past, but still continue to be bad now, people tend to forget how bad the past was, and wax nostalgic.

    Thus it has been in virtually all human society for thousands of years.

    Hence "Garden of Eden" type mythologies.

    Oh palease, give me a break.

    The USSR (and its Eastern block allies) can only be glorified by people who had not actually lived undeir their oppresive regimes.

    Sorry, I bet the creator of the second video is either under 30 and doesn't remember daily life behind the Curtain, or had a cushy position within the former system...

    This yearning for "back in the US - back in the USSR - you don't know how lucky you are" is a combination of selective or ignorant nostalgia along with what seems to be a Russian trait of admiring extremely strong-willed leaders.

    And, wasn't it great when Nathan ran things .... ?

    btw, that nostalgia for the old USSR days can be found among posters claiming to belong to what are now independent republics.
