In 1953 a coup overthrew the elected government of Dr Mossadegh. The release of declassified governments has revealed what much of the rest of the world already suspected, that the CIA engineered the coup and installed a 18 year dictatorial rule by the Shah, whose deep unpopularity eventually led to his overthrow and the presesnt Islamist regime.
The question come to mind then, how is it that these highly paid, American public servants, can do things that are not only illegal and unethical, but have such bad results. Its not only Iran, but Afghanistan, where the election of a socialist government led to the USA arming militant Muslims to overthrow that government. The overthrow of the Morsi government in Egypt but the USA supported Egyptian Army is likely to have similar results in the future.
In the Iran example, it was not only teh Americans that were at fault, but the British also. In fact, the British wanted Mossadegh out, because he wanted a better deal for Iran than they were getting from the unequal deals organised when Britain controlled much of West Asia. The Brits were dependent on Iranian oil to fuel their Navy, and were in a parlous financial state ( a synonym for heading toward national bankruptcy). Unable to organise a coup themselves, they asked the CIA to do it for them. The CIA were happy to oblige and hey! presto, a military coup and the return of the dictatorial Shah.
His overthrow by the Mullahs led to the USA arming Saddam Hussein to go to war with Iran, and American support for Saddam (he was their baby, until he got too big for his boots and finished up dead). Think of all the dead American kids, killed in Iraq, because of the stupidity of the American elite.
How much tax money, (that could have been spent on the aging American infrastructure) belonging to American tax payers has been spent in all these West Asia military adventures?
