In the UK it is illegal to use a mobile phone while you are driving or supervising a learner driver.

Penalty is an automatic £100- fine and 3 penalty points. A total of 12 points = loss of licence or 6 points for a new driver.

I once sat with a young lad as he died having rolled his car on an empty road. He was beyond help and passed away within a few minutes before the ambulance arrived. His girfriend died in hospital 2 days later. It was almost certainly caused by him using his phone and drifting into the nearside barrier. Anybody who had the conversation with his mum about his last moments, would never touch their phone while driving.

I know someone who's neighbour died whilst texting, she drove into the back of a stationary lorry, the police found the phone with a text message to her mother saying she will be with them very soon, the text was half finished

For me personally, The probability of an accident involving someone texting while driving is greater than having an accident with someone drinking and driving.

Anyone would have to be an idiot to text while driving. First, you must take your eyes off the road for several seconds to see what you are texting, and your hands are not going to be on the steering wheel. Then you are thinking about what you are texting, and it is not as simple as operating a regular phone (such as dialing a number to just talk), using a video camera, or operating your car radio. You are paying attention to which keys to hit, where they are, and how to activate the letter or number you wish. This takes attention away from driving. Even worse than keying a regular keyboard, dialing your cell phone, or changing the radio.

In fact, it has been documented that texting while driving is worse than drink driving. Reaction time is diminished when a person drink drives--and is even worse if you are texting. They do that on tracks where this can be observed in a safe way, such as crossing a white line or being given a signal by the instructor to stop. Unimpaired, it takes a certain amount of time. This time increases during drink driving. However, the increase is worse if you are texting.

If you are going to text, I advise you have a passenger doing the actual texting. Or, you could pull off the road in a place where it is safe, stop, and text while your vehicle is stopped. Or, you could wait until you get where you are going (I do not advocate doing this while at a red light, even though it is safer than while you are moving, because you could hold up traffic if the light turns green and you do not notice (still safer than doing it at 80 MPH).
