Our trichromatic colour vision is better than most mammals who see in just 2 colours, but the humble goldfish, in common with many other creatures, sees in four colours - ie they are tetrachromatic.
Our nocturnal ancestors lost some colour vision function which hominids later regained through gene duplication.
