Jackie Gleason and Google

Hubby is a fan of pop culture, old movies, 70's muscle cars, and baseball among other things. Normally I will not allow him to browse on my computer as he misleads google on my profile. I have no interest in filipino babes or cougars on the prowl.

I did allow him, however, to run a cruise through the internet to follow a line of inquiry. What hotel in New York did Jackie Gleason stay in when he was filming The Honeymooners, and is it still standing? I think the search ran us through IMDB to get the name of the hotel, wikipedia and regular google for its address, and then Google maps to cruise at street level to confirm if it is still standing and what it is called now. The hotel has gone through a couple name changes.

It is still standing, and it is still a (luxury) hotel! Suites are also for sale to the discerning consumer. The Manhattan Club. I now see pleasant ads offering me a suite in this selfsame hotel! It sure beats babe ads.

You gotta love New York. It preserves its classics.

I think Jackie Gleason must have lived in that hotel and had a live theatre in that selfsame building. This hotel is listed as the location in the credits. After all, the Honeymooners were filmed before a live audience. Imagine his sweet commute to work.

Until this latest browse through pop culture, I don't think google knew what to do with my preferences. I mean, I'm looking up geekville stuff with no consumer edge at all. Every once in a while zululily would throw out a line but I barely nibble. I'll take the Manhattan Club any day.

What was the address where the Kramdens' lived? If I understand my tv history, I actually worked at the same address.

    Ask your hubby.

Ok, my bad - sorry. I was thinking of Lucy and Rickie Ricardo. Same time period, wrong show. The Kramdens lived in Brooklyn.

    Some trivia:

The apartment building's address was 328 Chauncey Street in Brooklyn, New York
City. This was Jackie Gleason's childhood address
and the apartment he grew up in served as the model for the set.

I was wrong about Gleason performing in the same building as his theatre.

The Adelphi Theatre, originally named the Craig Theatre, opened on December 24, 1928. The Adelphi was located at 152 West 54th Street in New York City, with 1,434 seats. (Wikipedia)

The Manhattan Club is on 200 W 56th St.

If I read this right, does this mean that the Adelphi was about fifty blocks away from the Manhattan Club?
