" To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneus as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin."

    Cardinal Bellarmine, 1633

To assert any one of these things would have normally meant to be tortured to death by the then religious establishment.

Nothing has changed, people are still punished for speaking the truth about the dogma of the day aka fresh light.

    Lest we forget:

"It, therefore, is reasonable to conclude that before God cursed it the serpent possessed legs that elevated it above the ground."

Golden Age 11/12/1929 p.107 "Avoid serum inoculations as they pollute the blood stream with their filthy pus."

The Golden Age, Jan. 16, 1924, p. 250 "It has never been proven that a single disease is due to germs."

    Watchtower, March 1, 1922
"The indisputable facts, therefore, show that the "time of the end" began in 1799; that the Lord's second presence began in 1874."

Millions Now Living Will Never Die, p. 89
"we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old"

*** kj 377 20 Land of Magog No More to Threaten Mankind ***
Doubtless the Almighty God will use some highly scientific means, whether including antimatter or not, to dispose of the surplus of decaying bodies in a speedy and sanitary way. This remains for the survivors of the war of the great day to see and witness.

1921: "Millions now living will never die"

    Awake! 1961 Feb 22 p. 8
"Revelation 16:16 calls it the "war of the great day of God the Almighty," Armageddon. This war will come in the twentieth century"

The Truth Shall Make You Free, 1943, p. 285
"Man on earth can no more get rid of these demonic `heavens' (the organization of wicked spirits) than man can by airplane or rockets or other means get up above the air envelope which is about our earthly globe and in which man breathes."

    Face the Facts (1938) pp.46,50
"Would it be Scripturally proper for them to now marry and to begin to rear children? No, is the answer, which is supported by the Scripture. Those Jonadabs who now contemplate marriage, it would seem, would do better if they wait a few years, until the fiery storm of Armageddon is gone"

    WT 5/15/76 p.298
"It is a serious matter to represent God and Christ in one way, then find that our understanding of the major teachings and fundamental doctrines of the Scriptures was in error, and then after that, to go back to the very doctrines that, by years of study, we had thoroughly determined to be in error. Christians cannot be vacillating - 'wishy-washy' - about such fundamental teachings. What confidence can one put in the sincerity or judgment of such persons?"

    • "It has served us well, this myth of Christ."
      • Widely attributed to Leo X, the earliest known source of this statement is actually a polemical work by the Protestant John Bale, the anti-Catholic Acta Romanorum Pontificum, which was first translated from Latin into English as The Pageant of the Popes in 1574: "For on a time when a cardinall Bembus did move a question out of the Gospell, the Pope gave him a very contemptuous answer saying: All ages can testifie enough how profitable that fable of Christe hath ben to us and our companie." The Pope in this case being Leo X.

    Wow... Marked.

I was thinking about the myth of the Sun revolving around the Earth recently. I was thinking of how the Earth orbiting the Sun was a FACT, a TRUTH, long before it was "proven." Still, who persecuted those who spoke the truth? Religious leaders in powerful positions. So, as a JW, you MUST believe current ideas as TRUTH. If you are right about something, you had better remain silent. Even if you are right, you are still wrong. You will be persecuted, even if you speak the truth.

Is there any scriptural authority or precedent for persecuting another for refusing to believe anything that does not meet the criteria for truth?

fulltimestudent, I think that history has vindicated Cardinal Bellarmine. Read his statement again very carefully. Read it the same way you would read a smart alec statement like this refuting flat-earthism:

"To assert that the earth is round is as erroneus as to claim that there isn't a pink elephant floating around in this room." (In other words, it is not erroneous to assert that the earth is round. )

In the same vein, it could be argued that, rather than asserting the heliocentric theory to be false, Cardinal Bellarmine was comparing the validity of the heliocentric theory with the validity of the claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin. He was unwittingly accurate in his comparison. History has turned his statement born out of ignorance and naivety into a great work of snynicism, where he posthumously validates the very thing he sought to discredit.
