Washed up sailors fail to get a bawd By Ben Harvey LANGTREES brothel locked its doors for only the third time in eight years yesterday because exhausted prostitutes were not giving value for money to visiting United States sailors, owner Mary-Anne Kenworthy claimed. The doors of the Victoria Park business were closed early in the morning because dozens of prostitutes could not handle the US Navy-fed boom in the sex trade, Ms Kenworthy said.
"I would not sell a man a hamburger if I thought my buns were stale," Ms Kenworthy said. "I have always offered a quality service. If that level of service is not being offered because the girls say they are too tired then I'll close the doors.
"Some of the girls were taking the money without offering a quality service. I don't care if it's a Yank's money, your money or Joe Bloggs"money, everyone deserves value for their dollar."
About 580 bookings had been made in the past three days, Ms Kenworthy said. Some prostitutes would have made up to $7000.
The last time Langtrees locked its doors was on December 31, 1999.
"I didn't think any woman should have to work on the eve of the new millennium," Ms Kenworthy said.
