Since I have an SLR camera, I thought I would try to catch up on the rest of the world and purchase a digital camera.

I must buy one in the next few days....I leave for an Alaskan curise on Friday. Myself and my husband need to figure out how to work it and see the pics on the kickass computer we have.

Any opinions? I am looking at a camera between 2-3 megapixels. I want a decent zoom, since we will be on a ship and can take wildlife pics.

I am considering Sony or Olympus.

Any ideas, thumbs up or down? I am looking to spend about 300-500 total between camera and extra memory.

    Thanks!!

I'd go to http://www.sonystyle.com to do your research. They have a comparison of their sony product.

But make sure you stick to at least 3 megapixels, then the quality of the photo can even be made into good quality 5x7 and 8x10s if you want. Sony's memory stick is a great feature and I think they are the only ones that do that.

Also I like to make sure it has the display so you can see the photo that you take after you shoot the photo.

Thanks simplesally (BTW, I love your name!)

I have looked on Cnet and on Consumer Reports and have their opinions. I will check out Sony. When I started researching, I went to Circuit City and the guy I spoke to was really big on Sony. Between the memory stick and the ease of use. He said his 65 year old mother has a 2 year old one and loves it. Also, I guess there is the ability to take short movies; he said about 30 secs total.

Does anyone know how much memory a picture takes? Does it depend on the type of pic? I never saw this answered on the sites I visited.

Puffs' think about sticking with your SLR, and using a good quality 35mm film scanner to store selected images on your computer.

Have a great trip! Who knows, Some of us might run into both of you when you visit Skagway!

You can set the resolution to a lower one so it will have more storage space, ie if you are going to just want to develop your pics in a small size. But say you KNOW you want a nice portrait of your dog or child or whatever, then you use lots of resolution which will take up lots of memory.

Hubby and I took the Alaskan cruise last year and took about 2,500 pics. There is so much to see and a good zoom on your camera is essential. But I know that when I zoom in with my digital the resolution drops to the lowest dpi. Most of the time you will not get close to the wildlife. Even on the tours there is a legal limit to how close they can get so most of the time you will be working with the zoom.

Something that I found annoying was the refresh time between pictures. Find a camera that has the shortest time between takes. It was really frustrating to have to wait for the camera to be ready for the next shot while the whale was disappearing below the waves.

If you haven't booked your tours yet the Wildlife Quest at Juneau was amazing. Definitely worth the $$$.

In Skagway we took the train ride and it took was great.

There is so much to see and we wound up using all the film we took plus all I used all the space on the memory cards - take extra - you won't find them easily on the trip. Although the ships have internet access you won't be able to download your pictures using their computers so the extra memory is even more important.

BTW My husband prefers film so he took about 30 rolls and I had 8 disposables left over from the wedding and then I had my digital - still could have used more.

Ok we admit it - we went a little nuts but had a blast and all the pictures are worth it

And we used Walmart for the developing - great price and good pictures

    Have fun

Thanks for the info Lady Lee. I just got home...I bought a Sony DSC P71. It is 3.3 megapixals and has 3x/6x zoom.

I also have a really nice Olympus with a great zoom. I am bringing both.

On the digital, I purchased an extra 128 mb thingy (I forgot what it is called). It comes with 16 mb on the camera.

I will bring lots of film. I cannot wait....5 days and counting to lift off!

It sounds like we are going on the same route you went...Vancouver to Seward and then the train to Anchorage. I will post my pics when I get back.
