Cofty, you're definitely missing out. And there's a lot to learn, but it can and should be an enjoyable experience if you take your time.
First of all, J.S. Bach was actually a baroque composer. Although a lot of people loosely use the term "classical" to describe any music with violins and oboes, it more correctly describes a certain period of European art music.
The "Classical" period, as it later came to be known is generally pinned as being after his death in 1750.
Here's a website with some notable examples from the major periods of Western Art and Religious music:
It will help to listen to the samples in historical order as that is how the music developed.
I would recommend that, when you find some that you particularly like, you seek out more of the same and then branch out from there.

For me, it's Romantic period all the way. Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff are great.
