I realize that actual credentials and education in the field of journalism is a must for this endeavor, but I'd like to go to the KH when a special speaker/announcement is to be made, so that I can report on what's said/written.
Sure, I could go incognito as a dub/interested one, but what if I had some sort of press badge for an on-line magazine, one closely related to this forum?(wink wink) Is that unethical?

If you are "published" then legally you are a "reporter". Do you have a web site?
Just print up a little card that says: "Press" with your information and where you are published.
