Interesting article on the BBC website debunking some myths around WWI.

Lies, damn lies and statistics perhaps but interesting anyway.

Interesting points. But one can still argue that the Taiping rebellion did not threaten world peace or shake the foundations of the major world powers, although it was a huge tragedy. "The Great War" WAS a world war, and not comparable to the 30-year War or Crimean War or various Chinese uprisings.

But it is always refreshing to have some myths shaken loose.

an interesting series is airing on the BC canada Knowledge network too, on line also. Jihad, shackled to a corpse, the blockade.revolution.--

Even Einstein was moved in 1915 to dis-miss the idea of a caring JEHOVAH.

And it didn't start in October 1914 - ask most dubs and they think it did.

By no means is there universal agreement among historians regarding the significance of the "sea change" caused by WW1. Some historians consider WW2 to have been far more significant in terms of the changes it wrought, with some naming the cropping of the atom bomb the most significantly devastating act in human history.

yup Banga, they certainly had a lot riding on that year. O.K they have had to spin and lie about what they expected that year to bring, but just imagine if nothing had happened in 1914, or 15 or 16.......

They would have withered and died. Or would it ?

There was an interesting book on the phenomenon of movements where Prophecy failed, in fact I think that was the title "When Prophecy Fails" *. It shows that many members of such movements begin Evangelising with renewed vigour, thinking "Well we must be that much closer ......"

Maybe it was that spirit that enabled Rutherford to get it all moving.

    * One of the authors of the book is Leon Festinger who formulated the Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, the cult he studies in the book is a prime example of this in action, as are JW's.
