6 patients have now received the artificial retina and have
partial sight restored. One man saw his wife's face for the first
time in years, another was depressed to see how old he looked!

A modern miracle - brought to you by science - and NOT
    delivered by empty Watchtower promises!

Of all the things that could damage the organization,

Bionic Retina Gives Six Patients Partial Sight
    Wed May 8,10:30 AM ET
    By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - They're not as fast as Lee Majors' Bionic Man, but six patients implanted with bionic retinas are seeing things they haven't seen in years.

Thanks to an artificial silicon retina, the six patients, many of whom were virtually blind, are rediscovering simple gifts of the sighted: the flight of a flock of geese, the pattern on a well-worn tablecloth, the face of a loved one.

The patients are part of a pilot study of a solar-powered microchip created by Optobionics, a private company based in Wheaton, Illinois.

The microchips, surgically implanted behind the retina, are smaller than the head of a pin and about half the thickness of a sheet of paper. They work by converting light into electrical impulses.

"What we are doing is trying to replace the function of photoreceptors," said Dr. Alan Chow, a pediatric ophthalmologist and chief operating officer of Optobionics. He developed the chip with his brother Vincent Chow, an electrical engineer.

Loss of light-sensing photoreceptor cells occurs in retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration, the two most common causes of untreatable blindness in developed countries, affecting at least 20 million people worldwide.

What Dr. Chow found is that the chips also seem to be stimulating remaining healthy cells.

"We're pretty excited. We initially expected only some light perception where the implant was. What seems to be improvement outside the areas was unexpected," he said.

    'RESCUE EFFECT'

He said the device is having a "rescue effect" on the retina, restoring cells located near the implant site.

"What we think is happening is the implant is stimulating other cells around the retina. We're finding vision is improving not just where the implant is but also in areas near the implant," he said.

Chow is presenting his results later on Wednesday at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology annual meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The trial includes three patients implanted with the chips for 9 months and three implanted for 21 months. Patients range in age from 45 to 76. All had lost their vision to retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary condition in which the retina gradually degenerates.

Chow said the study was conducted to determine whether the device is safe. "In all six patients there are no signs of infection, inflammation, rejection or detachment," Chow said. He also said the chip has not eroded or moved, and none of the patients have experienced any pain or discomfort. "None can tell there is an implant in their eye," he said.

What they can tell is that they can see better.

Chow said one patient, who has had the implant for 9 months, saw his wife's face for the first time in years. The man, who previously could only see hand motions from four to five feet away, can now see cars from half a block away.

Another patient, who could not detect light even if a bright light was pointed at his eye, now knows when he needs to turn off his porch light.

For another patient, though, the implant has been a bit sobering, Chow said. The patient, who has begun to recognize faces, was disappointed to see how his own face had aged. But he was quick to note signs of age in his brother, who also received an implant.

Chow said his company will continue following the patients, with implants planned for the near future.

Optobionics' corporate investors include medical device giant Medtronic Inc. and CIBA Vision Corp., the eye care unit of Novartis AG.

I find this news of a medical breakthrough to be most upbuilding. It is always encouraging to read stories of people who are aided in some way which makes their life altogether more enjoyable.

Metatron, I have always admired your posts, however, you said:

Of all the things that could damage the organization,
    this is most wonderful

the lame walking, the blind seeing- a dream being fufilled NOW!

You know as well as I do that these breakthroughs will have little or no effect on current R&F JW's. The WTS spin-tactics on any given topic or circumstance is without equal.

I can hear it now, the garbage spewing from their mouths:

[Future Circuit or District Convention Talk Addressing this Issue if it had any effect on current members]

While man in his arrogance has tried to usurp God's position through medical science, how blessed we are to rely on Jehovah! In recent years medical doctors have encountered breakthroughs in which they restore sight and hearing through surgeries and artifical means. Does this mean that with medical science and its advancements there will be no need for God because man in his own ability can restore vision and hearing and other ailments? No. Because while medical science and its breakthroughs are commendable, they are still flawed. Only Jehovah can completely restore our physical capacities to human perfection! It will be a time when our vision and sight and strength will be better than it was in the prime of our youth, for then Jehovah will make us as perfect humans in his image. We will have no need for medical science or artificial implants, for Jehovah will provide our senses to the full extent possible in a paradise earth.
Dont ya just love their spin-tactics? While I would hope just as much as you that "the lame walking and the blind seeing" would damage the "organization".. the fact of the matter is it would not matter if medical science had a breakthrough which was a completely new human eye grown from your own organic tissue (which is not too far off by the way) to give you 20/20 vision.

Regardless, it would be "flawed" or "unChristian". They would discredit the evidence, then follow with accounts supporting their rhetoric.

Same old tactic, just a different day.

It is not religious persecution for an informed person to expose publicly a certain religion as being false, thus allowing persons to see the difference between false religion and true religion.

Reborn, your rephrasing of how the WBTS would respond to such news is brilliant.

However, SCIENCE continues to be the worst enemy of the WBTS.

    SCIENCE has disproved:

    Their version of creation.
Their denial of the "Ice Ages"
That vaccinations are nothing more than pus.
That it is safe to cook in Aluminum pots.
That dinosaurs did walk the earth
and finally, the biggest news, the breaking down of blood particles by SCIENCE has caused their blood doctrine to weaken to the point of breaking.

What about the slant that God gives man these gifts. How better to honor God by using the gift to its full potential, not wasting talents by not pursuing education, dreams, etc.

Surely, for believers, the good & abundant fruits of God's blessings are what gives people hope, that God is even good in the first place, not a tribal war monger telling all followers to disregard certain gifts for something like a door-to-door magazine route.

No argument from me, Will Power

I believe the inspiration of the Divine is available to
everybody. I used to marvel at how some of my prayers were
answered - I still marvel at it now that I've given up
    on the Watchtower!
