I don't know that I'm so smart -- but I do like knitting because it's like math -- I like figuring out the patterns, I like the calculations. I'm also the originator of the dullest threads in the world!

I would love to have the time to leisurely work on a mathematics degree. I teach elementary school mathematics and I still find patterns and relationships that I ve never seen before.

Great Teacher -- how nice to see your name on here! An old JWS friend. Math is interesting, isn't it? Even though I have lost most of it over the years, I have always enjoyed reading about it.

Rebel8 - thanks for the compliment. I"m one of those who have a hard time with people saying nice things about me.

    I totally take it back.

In fact, I accidentally posted that compliment on this thread. I meant to post it on the thread entitled, "The unremarkable symbiosis between scrapbooking and marine biology".

I had never before thought about crochet and math being related, but that makes sense. I can't crochet, tried it a few times but couldn't get the knack of it. My daughter on the other hand learned it by herself as a child, which was a challenge because she is a lefty and her grandmother, who taught her, was right handed. She first learned to chain, did miles of chain, then she started doing outfits for her dolls. She could just visualize what she wanted and know how to get there. As a teen she did thread crochet, beautiful baby bonnets, very intricate. She just has that kind of brain.

But I do plenty of other crafts, floral, mixed media collage, I fix up and paint old furniture, sew pillows and table runners, some minor upholstery. I just started dabbling in jewelry, I take apart old broken pieces and remake them.

When I worked as a systems analyst I found that doing creative craft projects helped me write better programs. It's like your brain learns to make cognitive leaps and that ability translates.

It's great now because with Pinterest it's really easy to find new ideas, it has revolutionized my work. There are a lot of great vintage graphics out there now and printers are so much better that I have started printing graphics (vintage advertising, French typography) onto fabric and using them on pillows. The possibilities are endless.
