I read a post that a JW can have whole blood transfused if it was a life or death issue.

I don't think so. That would be major news.
The only policy change is that a person who accepts a blood transfusion or authorizes one on behalf of a JW family member is considered AUTOMATICALLY DISASSOCIATED, and there is no Judicial Committee Meeting with the individual for a disfellowshipping hearing.
In other words, the person is judged and executed without a trial. They are still shunned by JWs.
