Why is heaven UP ?

How is it that heaven came to be in the sky? The hebrew word for heaven can mean "the abode of God" or "the sky, atmosphere, etc". The bible has hundreds of references to heaven being up in the sky.
Is it a carryover from pagan religions which had gods for the sun, moon, stars, etc...?
Perhaps the large number of mysterious and unknown occurances in the sky (movement of sun, moon, stars; thunder, lightning, rainbows, rain, wind,etc..) caused men to believe God resided there.
What do you think? Why is heaven UP?

Well, of course, there is no UP in real terms. Early maps of the earth were drawn upside down for instance. Scientists do not know which way 'up' the universe is and without gravity the concept is meaningless.

In the sky, yes, but it is obvious you don't walk over God. Only the slaves and animals live downstairs.

If it did exist, of course, it would be right along side us over here (Nathan points into the Nth dimension and vanishes for a moment...)

If I wasn't a raving materialist I would say that THAT is why Jesus said "The Kingdom of Heaven is WITHIN you."

It's a good thing I'm not spiritually inclined.

By putting "Heaven" somewhere way far away "out there" people can avoid the feeling of responsibility they might feel if they knew it was touching them, penetrating them RIGHT THIS VERY MOMENT.

well I guess there are lots of answers to do with ancient lack of understanding about the universe but a more simpler explanation may be that turds go down and you could hardly have them going to heaven could you ??

I once met an angel who went down.

Should I go to bed now before I get banned?

Aside from the fact that Genesis 1:8 says

And God called the expanse, Heavens.

"up' is probably more allegorical than practical.

Where else could heaven be, if not up? Down? Down where?

Don't lose sight of the fact that w believe "heaven" and the "presence of God" to be a Spiritual not physical condition/state of being -- and therefore to be outside the dimensions of time and space. So spatial references like up, down, here, there, are -- again -- purely allegorical: just like God's "hands," "eyes," "feet," "back,"or spirit "moving" across the water

Rev, you obviously aren't there yet. Funny how nathan, the materialist that he is, understands it. The eastern religionists as well understood it. They were millemiums ahead of the bible jews. The bible Jesus tried to explain, but they still didn't get it. There is nowhere to go, to get to 'heaven'. It intersects everything.
