I was listening to NPR on the way home from work and they said that most Evangelical Christians strongly support Israel. Is it true that they still understand the Jews as God's "chosen people". I thought they took Jesus' words literally, that God had abandoned them collectively once they rejected Jesus (I could be dead wrong here). Any thoughts....
Why do Evangelical Christians support Israel?

The bible does NOT say that God abandoned the Jews. On the contrary, the bible makes it clear that the "election" of the people of Israel is everlasting. Paul makes this clear in Romans 11:25-29 That the Israelites are ALWAYS God's people.
Why do Christians support Israel, A sense of Justice perhaps? Also, it is necessary in many theologies that Israel exist as a nation before the second coming can happen.

This support of Israel by evangelicals that you speak of is not the case here in Australia. True, the elcetion of Jews may be unchanged but that does NOT extend to the political nation of Israel.

Evangelical CHristian do believe that the Jews are God's chosen people, but they also have an interior motive for doing what they do, hastening the Lord's return. Their goal fpr the most part is to convert Jews to Christ eventually. Many believe the 144,000 are literal Jews who will come to Jesus and convert the world through a mass witness effort.
C.T. Russell and his Bible Students were Christian Zionist and well respected even today by the Jewish community, believing the Jews are God's covenant people and do not preach conversion to Christ. They have a separate and distinct calling, however, in time, they will see their messiah.
When Abraham, Isaac and Jacob didn't return in 1925 as the Judge predicted, he abandoned the fleshly Jews and gave their promises to his spirit Jews.

There is even a whole book dedicated to Pastor Charles Taze Russell: an early American Zionist (??), by Miskovitz (??)--sorry, it's been about two years since I checked it out of the public library.
It was amazing to read page after page of adulation for Pastor Russell and his unequivocal stand on the Zionist purpose.
This is one of the main teachings that Booze Rutherford turned into 'the teachings of demons.' It sure is a shame that he died of rectal cancer and liver failure....

Yeru,
You talking about the evangelical minority? If so, I can tell you that it's not a 'topic for conversation' here. Never mentioned, not even at EFAC meetings in Oz.
