The article is misleading. The Law Society publishing guidelines for solicitors to draft wills for those Muslim clients who wish to be Sharia compliant doesn't mean that Sharia law is to be adopted in the UK.

yes this story is fear-mongering media bollocks

Ridiculous. It has nothing to do with UK law.
Anybody can leave their possesssions to anybody they want and exclude anybody they want and there is not a damn thing the law can say about it.

Too right Cofty ! the only thing you leave yourself open to is a legal challenge against the Will if you have made no provision for someone you would normally be expected to provide for, or if stipulations of the Will are unreasonable.
There was a case some years ago where a guy who loved smoking Cigars was never allowed to do so in his own home by his wife who hate them. He stipulated in his Will that she would only inherit a not insignificant sum, if she smoked a cigar a day herself for (if memory serves) five years !
Although he had made reasonable provision for her apart from this bequest, this stipulation was ruled unreasonble and his wife inherited everything, smoke free.

Sharia law largely mirrors Orthodox Jewish inheritance law.
If specific rules are pulled out of context, both systems appear barbaric. When taken as a whole, both systems do a pretty good job of protecting women and children.
For example, while it is true that illegitimate children cannot take under Sharia law, judges go to extreme measure to rule children legitimate, including applying fantastical doctrines such as the “sleeping fetus.” Under the sleeping fetus doctrine, a child born to a widow 18 months after the husband’s death is still the husband’s legitimate heir. : )

At each level of succession, women only inherit in the absence
of men.28 The order of priority is as follows: 29
sons (the oldest son receiving a double portion);
daughters;
father of the decedent;
paternal brothers;
paternal sisters;
paternal grandfather;
paternal uncles;
paternal aunts;
paternal great-grandfather;

The statement that women only inheirit in the absence of men is outrageous in British society.
What is the Law Society? Perhaps it is only an advisory group.

Just to clarify, the statement was copied from the law review article concerning Jewish inheritance law.

Under Sharia, women get a half share because a male--either a male relative or her husband--must provide for her, regardless her age. Any inheritance money is excess for her, whereas the males' larger portion goes back to support the family. Granted, this is the theory behind the system, and reality often doesn't match theory. However, that is true of all inheritance systems.
