The society sold property assets for over 8 million GBP in 2012/2013 but still had 71 million GBP of property assets.
Essentially the Society has always made its money from buying land and old buildings , refurbishing and building with free labour , holding for a few years then selling. And doing it again. And again. Rinse & repeat. It isn't exactly rocket science , but it isn't really ethical either. I do feel sorry for the guys who toiled for years thinking they were doing "God's will" only to see the property being flipped for a big profit. Selling the New Zealand Bethel to another religion (AKA part of Satan's Babylon the Great ) must be especially galling. The Irish Bethel is still being mothballed awaiting a purchaser at less than a third of the price the WTBTS could have got in 2008 http://cms.mol.ie/uploads/Watch%20Tower%20House,%20Newcastle.pdf
Doubtless the new Bethel in Essex will end up getting flogged off in 20 years or so and it will be time again to re-locate.
That's what is particularly confusing about the Welsh purchase. I was asking a JW friend about it who is a high up UK elder who stays in for family / social reasons & has a lot of contacts in the UK Bethel & he can't figure it out either , other than that the WTBTS has a vast amount of cash sitting on deposit earning pennies and are desperate to invest it , splashing the dosh like a lottery winner in Harrods. A far more obvious move would be to buy and gut ( for example ) a run down farmhouse or have a new build somewhere. The potential to make a big profit by upgrading & selling on the property in Bangor is pretty limited.
