WTS admits its Australian branch was corrupt

There was some discussion here over the weekend concerning recollections of the Australian branch engaging in commercial activities in the past.

The Proclaimers book has a discussion of this and for those who may not have read it, I've 'cut and pasted' it here:

A related problem arose in Australia starting in 1938 and escalated during the ban on the Society (January 1941 to June 1943). In order to care for what at the time seemed to be valid needs, the branch office of the Society got directly involved in a variety of commercial activities. Thus, a great mistake was made. They had sawmills, more than 20 “Kingdom farms,” an engineering company, a bakery, and other enterprises. Two commercial printeries provided a cover for continued production of the Society’s publications during the ban. But some of their business operations got them involved in violations of Christian neutrality, the work being done on the pretext of providing funds and supporting the pioneers during the ban. The consciences of some, however, were deeply disturbed. Although the majority stayed with the organization, general stagnation in the work of Kingdom proclamation set in. What was holding back Jehovah’s blessing?

When the ban on the work was lifted in June 1943, the brothers then at the branch office appreciated that these enterprises should be disposed of, in favor of focusing on the all-important preaching of the Kingdom. In the space of three years, this was accomplished, and the Bethel family was reduced to a normal size. But it was still necessary to clear the air and thus restore complete confidence in the organization.

Nathan H. Knorr, the president of the Society, and his secretary M. G. Henschel visited Australia specifically to deal with this situation in 1947. In reporting on the matter, The Watchtower of June 1, 1947, said of the commercial activity that had been carried on: “It was not the every-day secular work of brethren engaged in making a living that was involved, but it was the fact that the Society’s Branch office had obtained various kinds of industries and called in publishers from all parts of the country, particularly pioneers, to work in these industries rather than preaching the gospel.” This had led even to indirect involvement in the war effort. At conventions in each of the provincial capitals, Brother Knorr spoke frankly to the brothers about the situation. At each assembly a resolution was adopted in which the Australian brothers acknowledged their error and asked Jehovah’s mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Thus, vigilance has been required and tests have been confronted so that the organization would continue to be devoted solely to spreading the message of the Kingdom of God.

So what does it all mean? IMO not much. It shows that the WTS is as imperfect as any other enterprise. Of itself the above report has little significance but, given the special role claimed for itself by the WTS, then it does have significance. It points up the great danger in any group or organisation claiming absolute authority over its members when, it itself, is so clearly imperfect. What's that saying? "Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely".

Knorr was jealous that the Australian Branch was smarter, and got the edge on him in creating more cash flow ... so he had the Branch sell everything off ... but what he didn't say was that Brooklyn bought everything up, and placed it in their other investment grade portfolios ... this way, there was no chance that some Branch could get enough money to break-away and survive a legal battle with HQ.

Just kidding. ... but I always find this account fascinating. It has been mentioend in other past SOciety publications ... and I wonder why they made such a fuss to expose this so-called evil of the Australian Branch ... this might be a good one to trace back and see what was really at issue behind the scenes. Just a thought. Thanks Ozzie for a great post.

They were probably being chastised for being so open about it! These kinds of enterprises must be funneled behind the scenes. The brothers would never agree to work for free if they thought that prophets went towards acquisitions.
Maybe the accounting firm that handled Enron could reclaim their good name by doing the world a favor and investigate the Watchtower's numerous companies, holdings, tax free status, charity work gag

When I was in my missionary assignment in the early sixties there were two Austalian brothers also serving there. I remember, hazily,
one of them discussing JW activities in Oz during the ban. They were referred to as the The Rackets. Where did this scheme originate. The above quote seems to indicate that it was the branch that originated the idea. If I remember rightly, this scheme idea originated in Brooklyn. Branches do not originate schemes like this on their own.

Here again in your quote from the Proclaimer's book, we see collective Brother Some show up once again, Brother Some who always shows up with a conscience.

The consciences of some, however, were deeply disturbed

    N. H. Knorr was the originator of the scheme, he knew how to saddle up his asses. (or is it, saddle up his assets.)

    G'day Belbab,

Interesting points you raise. I'm sorry that I never had the privilege of meeting Brother Some although I've read about him often in The Watchtower. I remember that he singlehandedly was responsible for misleading the entire worldwide brotherhood about Armageddon coming in 1975. I don't know what became of him. Do you know if he was DF for "running ahead" of the organisation?

    Cheers,
    Ozzie

So what are they saying here? They sold donuts to the military and couldn't live with themselves or something?? LOL... Gotta love it though.
