From the January 1, 2003, Watchtower, page 17:

Juan kept his valuables at home. He stored them under his bed —in his opinion the safest place in the house. One night, however, while he and his wife were sleeping , a thief entered the bedroom. Evidently, the thief knew just where to look. He silently removed every valuable item from under the bed as well as money Juan had left in a drawer in the bedside table. The following morning, Juan discovered the theft. He will long remember the painful lesson that he learned: A sleeping man cannot guard his possessions .

Even as a JW, this paragraph bothered me. It seemed quite insensitive. What kind of lesson is that? What was Juan’s solution? Never sleep?

Good post. All that we hold dear in this world is being stripped from us emotionally to see our true heart condition in a sense stolen right from under our noses

    Yes, very insensitive indeed.

But you failed to quote the next experience on the following page:

Pedro also kept his valuables at home. He also stored them under his bed. One night while he and his wife were sleeping , a thief entered the bedroom. However, Pedro had taken precautions and installed an alarm that beeped in his bedroom and awoke him when the thief entered the house. When the thief entered the bedroom, Pedro reached under his bed, grabbed his Smith and Wesson, and put two shots through the chest of the thief. Pedro and his wife then prayed that the thief be forgiven for his sins. The following morning, Pedro called the police to have the body removed. He will long remember the lesson that he learned: Be prepared for people illegally entering your home.
