Since I kicked up a fight regarding shunning at my local supermarket, I am still angry. Why, you may ask?? Because, only this morning I received a look of contempt from one of my ex-friends/sister.

I really feel like telling her what I think of her behaviour but I guess that would only enforce the "persecution complex"!!!!

    Just venting. Thanks for reading.

Just smile big and wave; go up and say something complimentary even if it is from the past.

We are inactive and get mixed responses. Mostly because people from other congregations aren't sure of our status; could mean the gossip mill isn't working in our cases. We always wave, smile big, and try to engage them in a short, friendly conversation.

It's a reflection of their character, not yours. Their pettiness says more about them than it does about you. They are small, pathetic people. You don't need them. They'll Gove themselves enough rope soon enough.

Blondie and Julia are spot on. Remember, the way you choose to interpret their "looks" and the way you react is a CHOICE. Please CHOOSE to be happy and don't allow their petty, hateful attitude to define your personality! YOU define yourself. YOU are not dependent on the attitudes or responses of others. YOU are a wonderful person just becauses you ARE.

And....you can always put this on a tshirt:

I did that to a friend. I saw her in a coffee shop so went a sat with her and chatted for a while. She said "I knew you'd come and talk to me." I said "I don't believe what the religion teaches, particularly about shunning." I talked for a while, but not long enough for it to get too uncomfortable.

It works for some people, but I've had others run for their lives. But when they do that, it is hilarious, and I can laugh at their patheticness. Taking the upper hand takes away their power and their contempt turns to embarrassment.

I also am one to engage in idle chit chat if I see a JW. Smile, wave and ask them how they are. It make me feel better se I am sending the message that I don't exercise shunning in my life. Kate xx

The Watchtower uses shunning because it is so very hurtful, so your feelings are normal. But there really is no point in making a stink, it doesn't accomplish anything, there is no way to force people to be nice to you. I would simply hold your head up high, make eye contact and smile. What they do with that is on them.

I recommend meditation for coming to terms with difficult emotions, you cannot change anyone but yourself, but it is possible to attain peace no matter what the situation.
