The Race for the Cure

Sunday, June 2 is the 2002 Komen Race for the Cure in Seattle. After Sharon died last September, wasasister suggested Mulan and I walk in the Komen Race for the Cure. We did and it was amazing. You can't help but get a little choked up when you are walking behind a child wearing a "in memory of my mom" memorial on his back. Then you notice that about half of the participants are wearing a memorial under their number. Some said wife, some said Aunt or friend. We wore ours in memory of Sharon.

I decided I would make it an annual event. It is such a good cause. One hundred percent of all donations go to breast cancer research. The Race is all over the US. Find out when it is in your town and sign up. www.komen.org If you can't participate then sponsor someone who can. It will make you feel good.

Last year we did the 5K co-ed walk. This year I made it my goal to run in the co-ed 5K run. I work out regularly and started training last April for my first 5K. I'd like to move on to 10K's and see how that goes.

This year they added a 1K run for the little kids. My son was very excited to be involved. This weekend we will go out and visit our neighbors to get some donations. I want him to see how this works, helping others who need it. He knows all about "Grandma Sharon" and her battle with cancer. He misses her and I'm so glad he is joining me in the Race.

Here is the link to a photo of Princess, my niece, Tania, and myself in last year's Race for the Cure.

Hoping to do it myself again. My Dad is having surgery two days earlier, so am not sure this time.

Off the subject here - but do you and Mulan live in Washington State? I live in Washington and would love to hook-up with some ex-JW's close to me.

Princess, my mother has metastatic breast cancer so I know something about the disease. Glad to hear of your involvement in fund raising - the progress seems painfully slow. Lately there seems to be some promising leads, we can but hope that a cure is on the horizon.

A very worthy cause it is too. My mum, my aunt and an uncle all died of cancer. My mother had a combination of breast and lung cancer.

Let us know how you go in the race Rachel!

    Rachel,

I'd love to stop by either the 3rd or 4th. I could bring a salmon to bbq! Let me know.
