Worldwide, child mortality has plunged remarkably...................because of the success of human efforts !

"Worse and worse" Yup, yup, yup....

This old system can't last much longer.

We truly are living in amazing times. So many improvements in world health. All a JW can say now is 'ah yes but you cant live forever can you?' Whereas just 30 years ago when I was a reg pioneer there were so many things that we could use that showed the apparent end was near.

OneEyedJoe - "This old system can't last much longer."

I remember talking with an older and extremely devout JW sister one time about the rapid and, frankly, amazing advances in medicine and technology that were occurring all the time, and how much they'd improve health and lengthen the lives of everyone, eventually...

...to which she responded, "Jehovah won't allow it to get that far; he'll stop it by means of the Great Tribulation, because those kinds of things are only allowed to take place after Armageddon" (presumably via miraculous means, and only for dutiful/elite JW survivors and resurectees).

BTW, I'm paraphrasing, but that was the gist.

Anyway, it was at that very moment I realized that the longer This Old System(TM) lasted, the more it undermined WT eschatology, simply by virtue of what humanity accomplishes whilst existing in it.

I'm positive that WT loyalists have grasped this, too (at least intuitively), and what's more, that it helps fuel their yearning for the End to come even more urgently (in part - to stop that progress)...

...if for no other reason than they don't want WT prophecy to fail, because it would prove the JW religion wrong.

Early 1900 we lived to be 42

    2014 average 80+

Many times i asked JW's if they would prefer to live in the 1700-1800....no answer from any of them.

They are like mules with blinders and of course i was one of them for 32 years

sporece - "Early 1900 we lived to be 42..."

Well, not really, actually; the (much) higher infant mortality rate skewed the average down, but still...

sporece - "Many times i asked JW's if they would prefer to live in the 1700-1800....no answer from any of them."

That happened with my mom, once.

She'd commented, "This is the worse time humanity has ever had to live in", to which I replied, "Well, when would you rather have lived? In the Old West? The Middle Ages?"

    Dead silence...
