I have been a devout promoter for many years.
Sadly, today, of all days, I was forced to re-examine some of the practices involved with the celebration of this holiday.
I was leaving a store, and was stunned to see a Festivus pole struck down and abandoned.
Obviously, this must have taken place at night, and the culprits were hunting poles without a license or permit, and were interrupted at the last moment, and then fled.
What a senseless slaughter!
How often is this happening?
And then, I got to thinking.
How many Festivus poles are left outside - vulnerable?
How many of these poles then wander the neighbourhood in search of prospective mates?
Currently, in my city, there are no by-laws regulating pole mating behaviour.
And poles being poles, baby poles are thereby brought into this world, and tragically abandoned (and in winter, no less).
Is there a worse sound than a pole cub mewling for its mother? I think not.
So, Festivus people, if you keep your poles outside, please, please, at least have them spayed or neutered.
Happy Festivus!
