60 Minutes claims to have Pell evidence

TV reporter Richard Carleton said he had documentary evidence to prove Catholic Archbishop George Pell tried to bribe victims of sex abuse by priests.

Dr Pell, now Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, yesterday called a press conference to deny allegations to be aired on Channel Nine's 60 Minutes program on Sunday.

Dr Pell said the program alleged he had offered bribes to try to silence David Ridsdale, who had phoned Dr Pell in 1993 while he was an auxiliary bishop of Melbourne to claim he had been sexually abused by his uncle, Catholic priest Gerald Ridsdale.

Gerald Ridsdale was sentenced in 1994 to 18 years in jail for sexually abusing children.

Dr Pell did not dispute the phone call in question was made, but denied trying to cover up the allegations.

He told reporters he was considering taking legal action over the program and claimed the interview was obtained under false pretences.

Mr Carleton today denied Dr Pell had been ambushed by 60 Minutes, saying he had been asked to comment on "sex abuse against children in the Catholic Church in Australia, past present and future".

Mr Carleton said barring a court injunction his interview with Dr Pell would be aired on Sunday.

"He made no complaint whatsoever at the time the interview was recorded," Mr Carleton told Melbourne's 3AW radio.

"He walked into the room, I shook his hand, he sat down, I interviewed him.

"At the end of the interview he uttered three words, `that was interesting', and left the room."

Mr Carleton said Dr Pell denied the allegations of bribery during the interview.

"And then I produced corroborative evidence and he said the witnesses that I produced were, the word he used was, misinformed," he said.

"Then I went on to produce other evidence ... (of) another family in Melbourne who have two daughters whose lives have been destroyed by another Catholic priest who's also in jail.

"They gave me a letter from Archbishop Pell's solicitors.

"The letter says we act for Archbishop Pell and later goes on to offer them $50,000 to shut up."

those outside oz, won't know pell.... he is a large threatening man, with an overbearing presence.

he's made his mark in the church by his "stand" on morals.

last week he made national tv by refusing to allow members of the "rainbow sash" movement, (a mixed gay/str8 group fighting for acceptance of gays and lesbians in the catholic church) to share in holy communion in a service at his cathedral.

yet! it has been publically rumoured that he surrounds himself with ah!!.... well!.... "effeminate" priests.

btw..as prisca's post shows, he is not accused of paedophilia, but of "cover-ups"
