Eleven-Year-Old Victim of Knife Fight Appears in Court

It happened last Thursday, the last day of the school year. Two boys squared off on the school playground. There are conflicting versions of who started the fight. But no doubt about who got the worst of it.

E leven-year-old Augustin Maures lifts a protective veil to show us the more than 100 stitches doctors needed to close two slash wounds to his face.

The Lawrence boy suffered the slash wounds and two stab wounds to the back when he got into a fight with an eleven-year-old classmate on this playground behind the Oliver School.

Augustin Maures, slashing victim "I went up to a kid, I asked him, Why did you hit my friend? I turn around for a second, and he pulls out the blade and cuts me."

The other eleven-year-old who now faces criminal charges arrived at court, his father shielding his face from our camera. The suspect's family says he was the victim, targeted for ridicule because he's a Jehovah's Witness. The boy, who's name is being withheld because he's a juvenile, claims he panicked and pulled the knife his mother bought him for family fishing trips in self defense. The mother of the wounded boy has a different perspective

Maira Maures, Victim's Mother "I saw my son with his face like that, I was very shocked. I cant believe an eleven-year-old would carry a knife."

Plastic surgeons at New England Medical Center in Boston pieced together Augustin Maures' face, hoping to prevent permanent facial scars. While seriously wounded, the boy is lucky alive

Mirka Maures, Victim's Aunt "I understand kids fight, but bringing a knife into school and using it on someone else, four times- not once four times - its just a little too much."

Mike Macklin, Reporter "What should happen to the other eleven-year-old?"

Mirka Maures "I think he should be committed until he is eighteen, and then probably even longer. Hes a menace to society."

The accused attacker pleaded not guilty to a juvenile charge of assault and battery. A judge ordered him to stay home in the custody of his parents. A hearing has been scheduled to determine whether the boy poses a danger and should be detained.

***how can anyone in their right mind think or say this? this child's face was slashed and he suffered two stab wounds. how can the parents say their child was the victim? are they crazy?

by the way, i cut my finger once with one of those fishing knives, and they are nasty. what's this kid doing carrying it around anyway? every kid older than 6 knows the school rules and its no-weapons, zero-tolerance policy. that kid should have gone to cub scouts. they teach you how to use a knife properly and that it is a serious matter. oh wait, that would be evil... anyway

the victim needed a hundred stitches to close his face, and suffered two stab wounds to the BACK. how are you defending yourself when you stab someone in the back? jehovah's witnesses think so little of this world (even our innocent children) that they have no sympathy for us and feel no remorse or responsibilty for their actions not committed against one of their own. i wonder what 'jehovah' would have to say about that...

I know how much the redicule at school hurt but stabbing someone?

It does seem strange that the family are so pro-JW they want to draw attention to the redicule thing but their kid was carrying a knife to school so can't have been very JW-ey

Hey Simon,It really depends on the kid.I was an elders kid and didn`t get into much trouble, mostly just childish pranks. Some of the other elders kids I knew, were destructive, vicious little bastards. They did some pretty bad things...OUTLAW

Well they sure sound like jws - "we are the victims" and "we didn't do anything wrong"

Who knows...this kid either has some mental/emotional problems to where he felt threatened to the point of bringing a knife to school, or he was actually physically threatened by this other kid to the point where he felt the only way to defend himself was with a knife (maybe he got beat up badly everyday), or he's just an evil kid who wanted to hurt someone. It's natural for a parent to be biased to their children, and perhaps this child has his parents believing he was physically threatened.

I think this story could have been about a member of any religion. I see no connection to being a JW.
