Word is there was a fire yesterday at a residence building at Congo Bethel in Africa. Lots of damage, a hundred or so out of a place to stay. No one injured.

My first thought, which must be wrong, is this is arson to collect on the insurance...

Sad that my mind first looks for potential corruption from within this org.
    Very sad.

The WT are so greedy grabber that they self-insure, meaning they've put money into investment accounts designated for insurance purposes in case of accidents or fire damage, Acts of God like hurricanes and tornados, etc.

But you better believe they recoup those dollars and them some by trouble minds and misguided consciences of the Rank and File.

The organization, as well as JWs, can be accused of many, many things. But arson to collect insurance?

Have you any evidence that this sort of thing has happened elsewhere at bethel offices around the world?

There is no doubt in my mind they will get their money back based on gullible people and the org's lies. We had a young missionary couple from Liberia tell us that the society pays out over thirty-five hundred dollars US per month for hydro. Most of the time when they need their washer or air conditioners on they use their generator. How can that be possible if you are using a generator most of the time? They said their government is corrupt. Now I realise it's the society that is corrupt getting what ever they can where ever they can. If your using a generator most of the time, there is no way it cost that much for hydro. But the people will believe it.

The WT is usually self-insured, at least in the US, so there would be no insurance to make a claim.

I know from first hand experience that not all halls are built to the same standards. I remember when I attended a KH in a developing country. Although the work was ok, it clearly was very rough. And I remember in the bath room seeing open wires hanging out from a power point. Which I just thought was out right dangerous. But hey it didn't worry the locals so why should it worry me. I'm guessing it's something like this that has caused the problem in Congo.

Not all jws live in the style of western jws. Fires do happen for non-greedy reasons.

Jws are still controversial. Congo is a very violent country. It has a history filled with corruption and an every man for himself sense of survival. Nothing in the gamut from an innocent accident to a brutal retaliation would surprise me.
