There are a few PC strategy games that I've had for awhile, and pretty much played out, but I've never played anything over the internet against REAL opposition! Anyone interested in setting something up with:

    Homeworld

Star Trek TNG - Birth of the Federation

    Sacrifice

    Starcraft

The first 2 are the ones I'd be most interested in; I know that all these games are on the old side, but it seems so hard to find truly addictive, detailed, non-boring strategy sims.

Also, if anyone could recommend a more recent strategy game along these lines, I'd very much appreciate it... I'm not so much interested in stuff like WWII sims & so on... The way I see it, if it can happen in the "real" world today, it's not too interesting as a game.

I play Unreal across the net but I have a very slow ping rate. I prefer playing it over LAN.

    Spidermonkey,

    Age of Kings 2

    or if that's too real

    Star Wars: Galactic Battlgrounds

Then there are your First Person Shooters: Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, RETURN to Castle Wolfstein, Medal of Honor (for PC), Serious Sam Second Encounter, Star Trek: Elite Force.....now for older stuff: Half Life, Unreal Tournament.

It sounds like you are more in to the 4 E's of stragey games though: Expand, Explore, Exploit, and Exterminate.

You can try Starfleet Command 2. This doesn't deal to much with "resource" gathering, but more of tactical and ship management. Warcraft 3 just came out, and that deals with more in what you find entertaining( like Starcraft )...and is an EXCELLENT, FUN game...both single and multiplayer.

You should give some WW2 tactical games a try, like Steel Panthers. If you have Cable/DSL, go to:

    http://www.matrixgames.com

They bought the "rights" to the game and offer it as a FREE download...although I have to warn you, it's a 465MB download. Yes, it's a legitimate site and not Warez or Hacker crap....they offer a variety of miltary strategy games to download for free, as well as sell some of the "newer" stuff.

    D8TA,

I thought about checking out Galactic Battlegrounds while waiting for Galaxies to come out, but the SW line of games has had some real stinkers in it. How would you compare it to other RTS games, like Starcraft, Dune, C&C?

    Hmmm,

Yep, seems lately that LucasArts had been fumbling the ball with it's "Star Wars" line of products for the PC lately, even their last Indiana Jones and The Infernal Machine was a bit of dissappointment for me.

Star Wars: Galactic Battle Grounds ( and Clone expansion )

The game uses the same engine as Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings and plays similar...except for a few tweaks. Air units ( or space units ) like X-Wings, Y-Wings, Tie Fighters etc., even have "snow speeders" have been included and well implimented. It's like a "mod" of Age of Kings. You can play various groups from both era's portrayed in the Star Wars story line. Naboo, Trade Federation, Empire and Rebels, Wookie Civilization..etc. It's pretty fun to match up..say The Trade Federation vs. Darth Vader/Emperor's Empire.

    Single Player:

I found Starcraft and C&C a bit more "fast paced" imo, and a little bit more enjoyable .. as everytime I went for resources ( if there WERE any ) I had to make it count. As in SW: Galactic Battlegrounds, it seems there is an "abundance" of resources...though you have to manage "some" resource in concert with use the "heavier" equip ( AT-AT, Tanks, Starships) wisely. But "minor" support units are not that much to worry about as per your resources.

SW: Battlegrounds is catered for the SW fan. It's what a SW RTS was suppose to do, as opposed to that gawd-awfull flop known as "Force Commander". I would say: If you want a SW RTS game, and an enjoyable one, get SW Battlegrounds. Not to mention that it's map editor/creator and scenario editor/creator adds to replay value. ( Comes with, and implimented in the game). It STILL has a strong and plentifull on-line multiplayer community. So in short, It's Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings mod, with a Star Wars theme catered for the SW fans looking for a good SW RTS game.

If you have a moderate system with a current 3D card and like First Person Shooters (FPS)....Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast seems to be the game that REDEEMS LucasArts current line of "flops". I still cant but the game down, and the multiplayer is OUTSTANDING.

    D8TA, thanks for the info:

Funny you mentioned SFC; just after I posted, I said 'f*k it' & went out & bought SFC I (only cost me 5 bucks, hehehe)... Looks very cool. I am still working my way through the manual (don't make fun; I admit I am a manual freak

LOL... another one I'm dying for is Master of Orion 3... September 25th, AAAAAARGH. I've never tried any of the Star Wars line of games; don't know why, but the scenes on the package didn't really do it for me. In contrast, the "teasers" for other Star Trek games in SFC looked SUPERcool... Anyone tried "New Worlds" or "Klingon Academy"?
