The watchtower, just part of mans evolution?

Heres something i have been thinking about. Are religious beliefs and the cults they spawn, just part of mans growing understanding of the universe and in fact stages that man needed to go throught in order to progress in understanding?

    I hope you understand that.

Maybe human brains ,due to individual cirumstance and experience and genetic makeup reach many different conclutions about life and the universe and try to live by them.Only beliefs and ways of life that are close to reality will be successful and lead to happy fuffilled lives , others will be filltered out with time untill mankind reaches a general consensus on what is the best way to live and most logical to believe.

Jehovahs witnesses were just part of the slection process, and will in time be fully rejected, just like the belief the the sun is the centre of the universe.

WEEEELLLLLLLLL, It's kinda back to front, ain't it?

Evolution teaches that things improve with age, but here we have the WTS lasting at least 130 years and has it improved? Debateable.

Come to think of it, if humankind's improved state was seen in the WTBTS, then...........God help us!

In short, I think not, Sleepy.

Cheers, Ozzie (of the only just wide-awake class)

It wouldn't surprise me if you are right, sleepy. Seeing as we are 98% monkey. Monkeys run in packs. They aren't into much independent thought. Most humans are still stuck in group/pack thought. Getting into the spiritual aspect of ourselves can lift us out of the animal part a bit. Although we don't want to do that too much, or we'll starve, have no offspring, etc, as those types of things come from the animal part. Interesting stuff:)

    sleepy,

It's a good concept, and one that has occurred to many, most famously Richard Dawkins who originally coined the word meme for ideas that spread in human society like a virus. If you search for "meme" or "memetics", you should come up with many good articles.

Dawkins' view is somewhat less optimistic than yours, though. Like the goals of genes are not in any way linked to being morally good or benefitial for the whole, memes only serve themselves. Ideas, like organisms, change to adapt to their envirionment, and survive by making their hosts spread them on. A good meme will persuade its bearer to spread itself to as many people as possible. To defend against competing memes, it convinces the bearer to be suspicious of and even refuse to get in touch with contrary ideas. Sounds familiar?

A meme only dies when it fails to spread to new people. And, like for viruses, the only real long-term cure is to give those who are not already infected a vaccination.

An overview of online and print resources can be found here: http://www.world-of-dawkins.com/Catalano/rl_memes.htm

Sleepy, I have thoughts much along the same lines tho I didn't isolate the specifics of this psychic evolution down to religion in general much less anything as specific as JW's.

It was very interesting to note your theory of a world concensus because this is precisely where I have speculated it may all be leading to, though I do not believe it will be the acceptance of any 'religion' but an understanding of the real truth which is not a static belief whatsoever and can't be translated into spoken language, much less a stringent dogma.

I figure it will happen, and most likely instantaneously, have you heard of the hundredth monkey phenomena?

All very interesting stuff, thanks for introducing an intriguing subject!
