In my post, Only Waiting for this Moment, I told about the baby birds in the nest out on my patio. Well, the little guys are striking out on their own. Here they are perched on the fan that hangs in the covered area of the patio, a good six feet from their nest. They've been flying around for a couple of days now, but this is the first time I've been able to get the camera this close without them flying off.

How adorable! They look like barn swallows. I'm surprised you were able to get out of your house without getting a close fly-by from mom and dad birdies.

Oh, no, Ms. Rocky, the parents, aunts and uncles, and unrelated neighbors have all dive-bombed me. I finally learned that they aren't actually kamikaze about it, so I go on about my business anyway.

I'm fascinated by all of this. It appears that Comf's scissortails are actually the America's form of our own European Swallow, the distiction I believe, is that the American form is coloured yellow beneath it's beak, whilst ours is coloured red.

This reminds me of an Andy Griffith Show episode. The one where Opie throws a rock and hits a bird, leaving it's three babies without a mom. His dad makes him take care of it until they can make it on their own. The last scene is classic:

One by one, the birdies fly from the cage. Opie is heartbroken that his friends have all gone. How empty the cage is!

"Yeah, but don't the trees seem nice and full," Andy says as the camera rises to take in the view of Andy, arm on Opie's shoulder, both grinning from ear to ear as they look up into the trees to the sound of many chirping birds.

    Fine TV. Extree, extree good!!

Thanks, COMF. You've brought back a good memory this lazy Saturday morning.
