    Do Superstitions Control your Life?

That's the cover article of the August 1st 2002 Watchtower. It is
a prime example of the mongrel dogma that results when a religions
basic beliefs, founded in the "old world" of heresay evidence
collides with the modern world of systematic scientific
    investigation.

The question is asked on page 3

"Are you affected by a "belief, half-belief, or practice for which
there appears no rational substance."? Your answer could be
revealing, for that is how one reference work defines the word
    "superstition".

"A person who lets superstition affect his decisions and daily
routine is allowing himself to be dominated by something he does
not really understand. Is this wise? Should we submit ourselves
to such a nebulous and possibly sinister influence? Is
superstition an inconsequential foible or an ominous threat?"

If you think this Watchtower article is going to help you on your
way to rational thinking and liberation from superstition you have
    another thing coming.

    Read more:

page 4 Subheading WHAT IS BEHIND SUPERSTITIONS?

"Many superstitions basically stem from a fear of spirits of the
dead or of SPIRITS OF ANY SORT"

page 5 Subheading THE SOURCE OF SUPERSTITIONS?

"Despite EVIDENCE(????) to the contrary, some people today tend to
deny the existence of Satan or evil spirits....

"Even though we cannot see them, evil spirit creatures do exist."

Do you see the bad logic? SINCE "many superstitions stem from a
fear of spirits THEREFORE...we ought to determine if there really
    are spirits.

And SINCE "evil spirit creatures do exist then we ought to do
certain things to avoid the evil power of these evil spirits."

Rather than freeing the Watchtower reader from superstition the
stage is set for the introduction of the JW brand of superstition.

    Some examples:

Going through all your belongings to see what might be "demonized".

Throwing out family heirlooms such as crosses - not even selling
valuable items for fear the money might then be tainted.

Checking into the background of the people who are having a rummage
sale. If there is a OUIJA board being sold or the person has a
collection of occult books you wouldn't want to buy that nice vase
    they have for sale.

Don't forget the ritual burning of anything thought to be
demonized. You can't simply put a demonized item in the garbage
because it might find its way back into your house. You've got to
burnnnnnnnnn it. And don't be surprised if you have to pour a lot
of gasoline on the stuff to get it to burn. Also, keep repeating
the name "Jehovah" because the demons are going to be real mad and
you will need protection during this process.

    Finally the ultimate advice:

"Accurate knowledge of the Bible is the BEST protection we can
    have."

Does accurate knowledge of the Bible include the understanding that
the people who wrote the Bible were steeped in superstition? Are
we supposed to suspect epileptics of demonic possession? Should
schizophrenics be exorcised of the spirits that are talking to
    them?

By the way. If you think your house is unclean this ritual from an
ancient book of magical cures might work:

    MATERIALS REQUIRED:

    Two chickens
    Some cedar branches
    Scarlet colored cloth
    Hyssop.

    PROCEDURE:
Kill one of the chickens in a piece of pottery while someone pours
water over your hands. Set the bowl of bloody water aside.

Next take the scarlet material the live chicken and the hyssop and
cedar branches and dip them in the bloody water.

While still dripping shake the water off toward the house seven
    times.

Finally go into the country and let the live chicken run free.

    Source? Leviticus 14:48-53

    OMG Prop:

Had to go look that one up. May have to read Leviticus again to see what other tidbits are in there. (been a long time since I've done any serious Bible reading)

I do agree about the WTS clearing away former superstitions for their own brand of superstitions. They seem to have forgotten, that "truth shall set you free", not further enslave.

    Blessings,

Good work Proplog! Yes, the Deemins ... I always forget about them ... so the Watchtower is still selling this old elixer of fear of Deemins! Wow!!! ... Yes, I can even tell you the time I had to destroy a mirror ... Deemin Infested ... and it would not break when I hit it with a big hammer ... and finally when it did break, we heard screams ... then at least we felt relief from Deemins in our home ... yes, and of course, we had to invoke Jehovah's name to scare the hell out of the Deemins ... Gawd, looking back on this, I feel like a jack-ass ... most embarassing.

proplog2.....I love this kinda stuff. It brings back such stupid memories like, a young woman who was studying but was informed that she may want to reconsider owning her present car because of its name. You see, she owned a Dodge Demon. I also remember when the Ford Taraus(sic?) came out. I think there was also a Mercury that had a dubious nameplate. Anyway, it was widely discussed in my hall that anyone strong would not own such an automobile because of their mythological names. I'll bet there are thousands of nonsensical experiences others can relate. Thanks for bringing up this stupid subject. Oh yeah, just remembered the AMC Gremlin...it was verboten too!

I'm a pretty rational guy but I did have some weird stuff happen when I was a witness. Now I believe it was a type of behavioral reinforcement. I do find it funny that since I've left the JW I have yet to experience anything that would consider "evil". The power of suggestion is allot more powerful than most people think. Why else would you have people call their beliefs "the truth". After a few years of that you truly believe it.

    THE DEEMINS!!!!!!!

There were always tons of urban legends floating about in my old Hall about THE DEEMINZ!!!!!!, but I have yet to see evidence of any "spirits" in ANY place! Sure, I lock my doors truly thoroughly by night, but that's to prevent all my possessions growing legs during the evening and disappearing! And that's not the actions of THE DEEMINZ!!!!!!!, but of THIEVES!

I can just picture some Dub standing in front of a second-hand mirror he bought praying to Jehovah to purge it of THE DEEMINZ!!!!!!!, because he just spent a lot of money on it and wouldn't want to have to whack it with a hammer really hard to break it!

So if you burn it and don't hear the screaming does that mean it wasn't possessed? Funny, in bible reading I only read where they possessed a living form not an article of some kind..I guess that means there really are smurfs. BTW, I'm still not going to step on any cracks in the side walk.

It's becoming clearer that whatever the wtbts writes for others is actually aimed at themselves and the beast in their own head.

They are the ones who superstitious about spirits, and they have a strong belief in demons. They deny the Holy Spirit is a person, want nothing to do with good spirits and they're always on the watchout for that guy Satan.

The only thing we've personally experienced that I have perceived to be truly evil so far is the demeanor of some particular jws.
