Another Pedophile Scandal By Reed Irvine and Cliff Kincaid July 11, 2002

Coverage continues of pedophile allegations and cover-ups by Catholic
priests and bishops. But what if the founder of a major religion was a
pedophile? Baptist preacher Jerry Vines, a former president of the
Southern Baptist Convention, ignited a firestorm in the media with his
claim that, "Islam was founded by Muhammad, a demon-possessed pedophile
who had 12 wives, the last one of which was a 9-year-old girl." American
Muslim groups have cried foul, and the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish
group, issued a protest. Commentator William Rivers Pitt has said,
"Imagine if someone called Jesus Christ a demon-possessed individual
    who consorted with known whores."

At the very end of a long story about this controversy, the Washington
Post noted that an Islamic holy book says that, "The Prophet [Muhammad]
married [Aisha] when she was six years old and he consummated his
marriage when she was nine years old." The literal words say that he had
sex with a nine year old girl. The Post quoted Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman
for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, as saying that many
Islamic scholars interpret that passage to mean Aisha was 16 when she
was betrothed to Muhammad and 19 when they wed.

By contrast, Myles Kantor, a columnist for FrontPage Magazine, says that
Vines description "is theologically and historically grounded."
Regarding the charge of pedophilia, he said, "one of Muhammads wives
was betrothed to him at six years old. The marriage was consummated when
    she was nine. Enough said."

Demons were frequently cited as the cause of mental or physical
afflictions in the days when people didnt understand science or
medicine. But in regard to the counter-claim of Jesus consorting with
prostitutes, such a statement ignores his condemnation of prostitution
and his attempts to convert them. On the other hand, the statement about
Muhammad having sex with a nine year old girl can only be re-interpreted
by completely changing the words and their meaning.

"We don't understand why this is a controversy," Dr. Ergun Caner told
the Dallas Morning News. He claimed the statement is "in Islam's
teaching something we were taught as children." Dr. Caner, who was
born a Muslim, is the co-author of the book, "Unveiling Islam: An
Insider's Look at Muslim Life and Beliefs." On CNNs Crossfire, Tucker
Carlson asked Hussein Ibish of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination
Committee, "Did Muhammad have a nine-year-old wife?" Ibish replied, "I
have no idea and neither does anybody else. To be honest with you, that
happened 1,500 years ago. Much of this is mythological ... It's not the
point." Carlson asked, "Do Muslim scholars believe it to be true? Ibish
replied, "Actually, I have no idea about whom the prophet married, and
when, and why -- and it doesn't matter. The point is that this is part
and parcel of a generalized attack on Islam and Muslims."

It may be part of an attack on Muslims but that begs the question of
whether the statement is true or not. If the Catholics should be held
accountable for pedophiles in their midst, the Muslims should too, even
    if it is their founder.

It is true that Muhammad according to Islamic tradition married Ayesha when she was 6 years old and "consummated" the marriage when she was 9. At that time he was 54 years old.

Sahih Muslim Book 8, Number 3310:
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house when I was nine years old.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64
    Narrated 'Aisha:
that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, Number 65
    Narrated 'Aisha:
that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old. Hisham said: I have been informed that 'Aisha remained with the Prophet for nine years." what you know of the Quran (by heart)'

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, Number 88
    Narrated 'Ursa:
The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with 'Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years.

If there can be any defence, it would be that such marriages were extremely common up to the last centuries, all over the world. If it had not been for the fact that the Bible does not report the age of women (girls) at marriage, we'd no doubt see many Christian fundamentalists today defend pedophilia like Iranian clerics do today when they block the parliament's attempt to raise the age of consent for girls from nine.

The language in the gospels makes it obvious that Mary was a young girl, probably around 13 following the customs of the day, when she gave birth to Jesus.

    Jan,

Thanks for the info. Here is some more information on this from a friend that has his own forum and deals with many Muslims.

    ...............................................................................................................................................

How could those Muslim leaders not know when it is in their hadeeths? And how can they say it is an attack when it's written by Muslims DURING Muhammad's era? And how can they say it's mythological when the foundation of Islam and their salvation rituals are based heavily on the hadeeths? Those leaders are not addressing the issues that puts their religion in doubt. Here's info on who this Aisha is and the Hadeeths that proves her young age:

    AISHA BINT ABU BAKR
daughter of Abu Bakr and third wife of Muhammad. According to the ahadith in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and numerous other reports, she married Muhammad at the age of 6 when Muhammad was 53 and they consummated their marriage at the age of 9.

    Narrated 'Ursa:
The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with 'Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death). (Sahih Bukhari 7.8
    Narrated 'Aisha:
I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me. When Allah's Apostle used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me. (The playing with the dolls and similar images is forbidden, but it was allowed for 'Aisha at that time, as she was a little girl, not yet reached the age of puberty.) (Fateh-al-Bari page 143, Vol.13) (Sahih Bukhari 8.151)
    Narrated 'Aisha:
Allah's Apostle said to me, "You were shown to me twice (in my dream) before I married you. I saw an angel carrying you in a silken piece of cloth, and I said to him, 'Uncover (her),' and behold, it was you. I said (to myself), 'If this is from Allah, then it must happen.' Then you were shown to me, the angel carrying you in a silken piece of cloth, and I said (to him), 'Uncover (her), and behold, it was you. I said (to myself), 'If this is from Allah, then it must happen.' " (Sahih Bukhari 9.140)
Some Muslims claimed that Muhammad did not initiate the marriage with Aisha, but that Abu Bakr, after Aisha was spunned by a prospector and was not able to find another man to marry her, approached Muhammad to marry here. However, the following hadith clearly showed that it was Muhammad who was the initiator and Abu Bakr was even shocked at that suggestion.
    Narrated 'Ursa:
The Prophet asked Abu Bakr for 'Aisha's hand in marriage. Abu Bakr said "But I am your brother." The Prophet said, "You are my brother in Allah's religion and His Book, but she (Aisha) is lawful for me to marry." (Sahih Bukhari 7.1
    Narrated Hisham's father:
Khadija died three years before the Prophet departed to Medina. He stayed there for two years or so and then he married 'Aisha when she was a girl of six years of age, and he consumed that marriage when she was nine years old. (Sahih Bukhari 5.236. see also Sahih Bukhari 7.64, Sahih Bukhari 7.65)
Aisha was surprised at the (consummation) of marriage"
    Narrated Aisha:
When the Prophet married me, my mother came to me and made me enter the house (of the Prophet) and nothing surprised me but the coming of Allah's Apostle to me in the forenoon. (Sahih Bukhari 7.90)
    Narrated Aisha:
The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age. (Sahih Bukhari 5.234)

    Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:
The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) married me when I was seven or six. When we came to Medina, some women came. according to Bishr's version: Umm Ruman came to me when I was swinging. They took me, made me prepared and decorated me. I was then brought to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him), and he took up cohabitation with me when I was nine. She halted me at the door, and I burst into laughter. (Sunan Abu Da'ud 41.4915, Sunan Abu Da'ud 41.4916, Sunan Abu Da'ud 41.4917)
Aisha related many hadiths which became the basis of many portions of the Shar'ia. She was given the title Mother of the Believers (Ummul Mu'minin).

Some others have contended that the hadith reports are inaccurate as regards her age: The Learner disagrees and gives more details, while another confirms that she was 9 years old, (The Young Marriage of 'Aishah), besides taking some snipes at Christians.
