A goverment enquiry has just eastablished that Harold Shipman killed at least 215 people.

But they have yet to discover why.In fact why do people do such things? What motivates , what to everyone seams like a sane normal person, to do such things?Again why do people abuse children, or why do people lead a religion that is so obivously flawed yet requires people to give their lives under certain conditions (Blood etc)?

The leads me to wonder just how well developed the human brain is.We marvel at its ability to many things, but is it all we think it is?Often conflict exists in us when we desire to do things yet realise this could be harmful to others. For some reason we consider it right not to harm others and wrong to do so.Animals for example seam to lack such reasoning power. But we have not fully rid ourselves of such basic urges. Some humans have a harder time than others in doing what is right.

Prehaps as time goes on such people will become rarer , as often they are not atractive to others as mates, and such quirks will dissapear almost completely from humans.

Trouble is this reasoning is dangerously close to what the Nazis were hoping to achieve.

So is there another way to rid society of such people , or indeed should we?

Also why do you think people do such bad things to each other?

A hard question to answer, although my own personal feeling is that he felt so detached emotionally from his patients and probably the world in general, that he was able to pass that inate barrier that prevents us from acting upon our base instincts and developed a liking for power over life and death.

There must have been a sense of satisfaction for him to weild the power of GOD over his victims. Maybe he viewed his victims as not being worthy of life, maybe he had a higher vision of society and reasoned that humanity was a scourge upon the earth - infected - weak - selfish - unclean - UNWORTHY !!

I do not have the answer, but know how we all have instincts that conjure visions in the mind, horrible visions, but most of us don't act upon them.

Many years ago, I stumbled across a paperback book on a rack in the store. I wish I could remember the title, but age has made my memory fuzzy. I do remember that it was written by a convicted rapist/murderer, with all proceeds of the book going to victims families. (this was prominently noted in the inside jacket)

In it, he explained that writting notes was part of the therapy he was made to take while serving his life sentence. His therapist had them all compiled into the book.

But, it was a very eerie book to read. In it, he detailed stalking the victims and how he gradually progressed to the point of actually murdering one, even after being convicted numerous time and serving prison terms each time. He did state that he could never understand why he did it and that he knew if ever released, he would do it again. It would seem that for some reason, he felt he was born with a defective brain and ended up praying that he was never released again. What I could never accept was that he claimed he just couldn't help himself. He had no control.

I wish I could remember the title, but it was over 25 years ago I read it. Not a book for the faint hearted, though.

See, I've always maintained sentience is an evolutionary dead-end.

    No, really. Think about it.

Only the fittest lions with the best genetic code survive to the next generation because lions lame from some genetic mistake don't get mated with. Lions born with defects that prevent them from being incredible hunters won't get a chance to reproduce.

If a lion takes another mate? He kills her offspring by other males (obviously, they were inferior genetic stock).

With no 'sympathy' or 'pity' to weigh them down, all other animals will continue to 'cull the heard', so to speak, by having genetic errors fail to reproduce.

Not humans, though. 'Sympathy' and 'pity' can cause mismatches were one person with a healthy genetic code has kids with somone who doesn't. Or, people with genetic related disabilities having kids with each other.

While not judging any such behavior (we are, after all, all sentient and deserving of happiness), it does pretty much put a stop to human evolution. In the animal world, only the fittest get a chance to pass their genetic material on to the next generation. Humans don't work that way.

as often they are not atractive to others as mates, and such quirks will dissapear almost completely from humans

And, see, THIS is the problem right here. Assuming what is wrong with their heads is genetic, they WILL find mates and pass on their 'broken' genetic material. Either someone who feels pity for their case or someone with self-esteem problems who continues to get in abusive relationships.

(And, in any case, even if it ISN'T genetic, and just learned behavior, if they stay out of jail long enough to raise kids from the resulting union, that kid will end up just as warped as them)
