Experts try to make sense of tragedy COMMENTS: Usually there's a history of abuse behind a molester's motive, a professor said. BY BETTYE WELLS MILLER The man who abducted, molested and killed Samantha Runnion had a psychotic breakdown or an escalating habit of abusing children, forensic psychologists said. Most likely, the 5-year-old's attacker has molested children before, they said. "It is very rare to have a person who has no history . . . suddenly do this," said Robert Geffner, a clinical research professor. He is founder and president of the Family Violence and Sexual Assault Institute in San Diego and editor of the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse.
"You look for other causes, like re-enactment of a prior trauma, a psychotic break, a sudden-onset delusional disorder or something going on in the brain. . . . "This was brutal, antisocial, psychopathic," Geffner said. "He may have a past of serial abuse, but not at this level. . . . Most likely there is some kind of history." Craig Rath, a San Bernardino psychologist frequently called as an expert witness in Inland courts, said some molesters deteriorate emotionally over time, leading them to commit more violent acts. Sometimes they panic. "Sometimes there's a desire to use violence as a part of sexual arousal," Rath said. "Sometimes there is a progressive deterioration and escalation of sexual behavior that is necessary to satisfy the sick need of the individual."
Most pedophiles do not kill their victims, said Jose J. LaCalle, a San Francisco psychologist who has worked on more than 200 molestation cases in which children were slain. "It could have been his intention to molest only, and he was scared by something and was afraid of being detected," LaCalle said. Samantha's abduction in broad daylight in front of witnesses is unusual, Geffner said. "There might be gratification and power issues, proving he's in charge," the San Diego professor said. "We don't know what set him off. It could be a variety of things -- significant put-downs or let-downs in his life, and this is his way of getting back on top. Maybe he was a power-oriented rapist and she fought back and he raged." The distance between where Samantha was abducted and where her body was found suggests the actions of a predatory pedophile, LaCalle said. Still, what would make a man like this cross the line and kill her is a mystery, he said. "It makes no sense." That is the terrifying part for parents, Geffner said. "This is more difficult to prevent, so it scares people more," he said. "This is a rare instance. We don't get many of these -- abduction on the street, sexual assault, then a homicide.
