I just heard a fairly reliable rumor that Sam Herd will be the "guest Bethel speaker" at the circuit assemblies at the Orangeburg SC assembly hall on January 17-18.

Orangeburg is about halfway between Columbia & Charleston, assembly hall is right off I-26.

Just in case any of y'all want to be enlightened.

I can't even hear that mans name without hearing that terrible talk he gave about women.

i wonder what his wife is like.

I knew the Herds before he became GB, while he was a DO  in the US midwest. I partly blame him and his wife for "encouraging" me to apply for and attend MTS. She was funny but tough old bird.  He was full of himself, and is the token black guy on the GB.

Herd is a terd. He is so full of himself. He fashions himself a Cosbylike comedian and likes to tell little stories/experiences about when he was in the traveling work.

These GB guys make asses out of themselves and are an embarrassment to the rank and file jw's with their 'stupid' talks/rants and comments. They want their words to be taken as gospel without "actually" having them printed in the wastetower magazine. They seem to use circuit assemblies as a forum to test out their personal opinions to see the reaction of the rank and file.

I remember Garritt Loush giving a talk at our circuit assembly 15-20 years ago about violent sports and basically telling strongly suggesting to us not to watch football or soccer. OMG! our CO,jumped on that stupid talk at his next visit and told the servant body that we needed to heed those words from "the least of Christ's brothers" as if Jesus himself said it!

WOW! I fell for it and didn't watch football for at least a week.

Wasn't it better when the GB were a bunch of mysterious guys behind the curtain? I mean once they revealed themselves, it became obvious just how puffed up and pompous these guys are.

    Just saying!

@eye,  i dont think theres any doubt that they use these events as trial ballons of sorts, although typicaly the big 3 day sales conventions arnt trials as some of the talks are printed verbatim to be used as wt studies.  The one day events seem to have that 'trial balloon' element (in my opinion) for sure.  Something else to factor in though, as in the case of losche, is that they all have their own personal views of things and, as you noted, they feel free to run with them because they are on the GB.  The locals tend to run with them because they are GB and it somehow gets codified without actually being written, again as you noted.   What i have noticed though is that these sorts of unwritten rules are usually adhered to for a short time frame by the majority, if at all. We also had losche rant  to us about football. I was a staunch believer at the time and missed not a game over it. In fact he was laughed at by every male in my congregation, with some suggesting he should be invited over for beer and wings (a local custom during football).

i say all that to agree with you but im not sure how far that type of thing goes in the long run with most dubbies.  Even tony tight pants remarks about "spanks" (spandex) faded.  Local sisters tightned up for about one workout, seemed to realize the foolishness of it, and reverted to what worked (out) for them.  Their insistance on dubbies adhering to whats in actual print has a two edge sword effect in these situations. If they dont read it they tend to see it as having wiggle room (at least locally).  This GB may simply not be as powerful as some in the past, at least in as far as having the power to imply and get obedience.

I also have noted that having the locals see them more isnt helping them any either.  Instead of the gb being a rare treat and having a 'man behind the curtain' mystic, the locals are seeing them often (on gb tv especially) and its losing its luster.

I think this is a significant point.

There will always be nitwits who adore the ground these nincompoops walk on.

But there is still a pretty big chunk of JWs who are not so idiotic.

The more these morons present themselves on the broadcast, the more the luster of "ooh, he's anointed, he must be special" wears off, and the more they just look like mildly innocuous grandpa figures (Jackson, Sanderson) in the best case, or utter loons (Morris, Lett, Herd) in the worst.

Interesting.  I wonder on the long term value of the GB making a rule that everyone follows for a week or not at all.   What lasting undermining effects does it have on the individuals that shrugs it off.  To be able to shrug it off in the first place the JW has to toss the info and the GB member who gave it ....even if only slightly.  It chips away at blind faith.
