Fake 'hovahs

Other discussions about the cost of WT rags reminded me of something.

Several years ago, late eighties, while I was out selling, er placing Witchtower and Afake! rags door to door, I encountered a householder(I hate that frickin' word) that had an interesting observation. She said, "Oh, you people were just here, and I bought some magazines". That's weird, I thought, because I had just checked out the territory and it hadn't been worked for a year or so. She said that she had paid 50 cents each for the rags, and this was when they were 25 cents each.

Never occured to me that fake 'hovahs would go around selling WT rags. The fake 'hovahs must have picked the rags up from a laundromat or hotel lobby. weird.

Any one else hear of fake 'hovahs?

Yes, they were going through the business territory to collect "Christmas" contribution. Then, I really knew they were fake. x-p

One of the more idiotic ways of making money, if they had a record anywhere near my record of placing a magazine every 20 hours or so. Hell, their transport costs alone would outweigh any profit they could possibly make!

She must have been on someone's magazine route.

That is too funny! I did not think of that.

I thought of someone picking up the rags from the laundromat and selling them...never thought about return visits...or even that a bona fide witless would charge DOUBLE for the rags. What a hoot!!!

My first thought is that the "householder" was LYING just to get rid of you!

You know, like when the Policemen's Benevolent Association solicits over the phone, and people say, "I already gave at the office..." -- NOT! -- ;)

It probably WAS a year since anyone had been to that house, and she couldn't remember what she paid for the mags a year prior, so she just came up with 50-cents each (which would sound reasonable to worldings for magazines) just to brush you off so she wouldn't have to take any mags nor fork out any quarters.

However, the magazine route is also a very plausible.

Naaaaa, I never heard of any fake dubs doing door-to-door work.

    Hi Grits,

I asked to see the rags, and they were the current issues. Must have been other 'hovahs and the woman got the price screwed up.
