This earthquake shook many homes in the border region between Germany and The Netherlands. One report of a chimney being shaken off was the only damage reported from the epicentral area. The earthquake was felt in Germanys Rhineland and in the Ruhr Valley as well as in The Netherlands and Belgium.
Yesterdays earthquake locates approximately 35 km SSE of the magnitude 5.9 ML earthquake which occurred near Roermond, The Netherlands on 13 April 1992. This event resulted in extensive damage in the epicentral area estimated in excess of 100,000 ECUs and was felt as far away as Kent and Essex.

A strong earthquake has shaken the border region of eastern Russia and northeastern China. Occupants of high-rise buildings as far away as Beijing, almost 1,000 km to the southeast, felt the earthquake. There have been no reports of deaths or damage. This was due to the depth of the epicentre being deep underground.

At least 500 people have been killed and a further 2,000 injured. Some 60 villages have been raised to the ground leaving 25,000 people homeless. Most of the fatalities have been reported to have occurred in the town of Bou'in-Zahra. Rescue work has been hampered and further damage has been caused by a series of aftershocks, one with a magnitude of 5.1 Mb a few hours later.
This is the most fatal earthquake to hit region since a magnitude 6.1 Ms event, on 28 February 1997, which killed at least 1,100 people and injured 2,6000 more. This earthquake located approximately 280 km NNW of yesterday's event.

Felt reports described, "whole house shook", "pot plants moving" and "it was enough to bring several people out onto the street". Data from the BGS rapid-access networks in the region were examined and a signal consistent with an explosion were recorded at 20:41 UTC.
The coastguard at Solent was contacted who confirmed that unexploded ordnance had been detonated in the area at the time.

This earthquake locates 120 km NW of a magnitude 6.8 Ms event on 7 December 1988 that killed 25000 people and left 500000 homeless. It also locates 115 km SE of a magnitude 7.0 Ms event on 29 April 1991 that killed at least 114 people and injured one thousand more.

Latest reports indicate that one person has been killed and at least 100 people have been injured in Kosovo. Many buildings have been seriously damaged and the town of Gnjilane appears to be the worst hit by the earthquake, where residents have been left without electricity.
Yesterday's earthquake locates approximately 250 km north of a magnitude 6.6 Ms earthquake on 13 May 1995, which injured 25 people and destroyed 5,000 homes.

BGS have received felt reports from residents of Margate and Ramsgate of a felt event at approximately 19:20 UTC last night. Felt reports described, "our house trembled violently", "the children awoke from sleep and were frightened" and "people were outside wondering what had happened". Data from the BGS rapid-access networks in the region were examined and a signal consistent with an explosion were recorded at 19:13 UTC.
The coastguard at Dover was contacted who confirmed that a 600lb WWII German Parachute mine had been detonated in the area at the time.

Latest media reports indicate that 5 people are dead and over 200 injured. Tremors were felt throughout the island with the most serious damage occurring in the capital, Taipei.
This is the most fatal earthquake in the region since a magnitude 7.7 Ms event on the 20 September 1999, which was located approximately 143 km south west of Sunday's event, that claimed the lives of more than 2400 people and left around 600,000 homeless.

The town of Nahrin near the epicentre in the Hindu Kush mountainous region of northern Afghanistan, is reported to have been destroyed. A magnitude 5.0 aftershock occurred approximately seven hours later at 21:45 UTC.

The BGS seismograph network has detected a magnitude 2.5 ML event near to the town of Bargoed in Mid Glamorgan today. No felt reports were received by BGS or the local Police. However, an event of the same magnitude and location was felt on 18 October last year, and a possible explanation for non-reporting could be due to the extreme weather the UK is experiencing at present.
