I have a Samsung 4k monitor which was pretty cheap - works great with a Mac / DisplayPort and gives all the retina options ('cause everything is tiny at native res!).
It's amazing doing Picture in Picture from a 2nd PC (HDMI). One corner of the screen is 1080P - the 4k is effectively 4x full screens.
Funny how displays are picking up again - they reduced in resolution for a while due to the 1080p marketing hype being sold as "hi def" when many had higher resolutions before that.
Thing to keep in mind a monitor resolution of 3840 x 2160 makes things like fonts and Icons very tiny unless the software that your using upscales to that higher resolution . Web Browsers can usually zoom in to bring things up to a readable level.
I'm using a monitor of 2560 x 1440 and using software like Adobe Photoshop, the menu icons are very small and there is no upscale designed yet for this resolution.
Another thing to note is if your a gamer, you have to have a top tier graphics card to run that monitor at that resolution as well.
I suggest going to reputable computer store and see if they have a 4K monitor on display and test it out first.
