Hockey ... why?

In my area Hockey is mentioned and known so little, that you would be hard pressed to find any sports memorabilia. None of the schools play it, and the nearest team is over 8 hours away. The local news does not even broadcast the scores, and you would have a hard time finding one person in town who knows who the Stanley Cup was won by last year. Most would ask first, "what is the Stanley Cup?"

So my question to you, why do you think Hockey is so big in certain parts of the country, and all but nothing in others. For example, Canada loves hockey! While Mexico only cares about soccer. Is it all just based on regions?

    Just wondering

(Who couldn't name two hockey teams if his life depended on it)

ummmmm.....maybe it's cuz hockey involves ice. Last time I checked, we Canucks had a lot more of it than, say, Mexico for instance...

    kenpodragon,

It may be difficult to be the best Hockey player in Romania....

    But it couldn't possibly matter.

Hockey is tough to play because you first have to SKATE!

The Dominion Challenge Cup, also known as the Stanley, is annually awarded to the team which skates more forcefully, inflicts more pain, and asserts physical domination.

    Get it?

When did Oregon get eight hours away from Vancouver?

And don't make me tell you about NHL players from Oregon.

Are you telling me the newspapers in Portland have no NHL coverage? None?

I'm willing to bet I can find an amature hockey team fifty miles from you.

And you're still the best Hockey player in all of Romania.

Not that it can possibly matter.

I am in Southern Oregon ... Vancouver, BC is about 9-10 hours drive if we do not hit traffic in Portland and Seattle. Our local news just seems to ignore it ... even the hockey sports fans I know ... say that hockey is almost a second thought or over looked on the west coast of the USA.

Only pro team we have in any sports is the Portland Trailblazers. Keep in mind, that LA has more people then the whole state of Oregon. I am not saying I so not like the sport of Hockey, (Although I have made no effort to get to know "one" thing about it ... by choice) only that I wonder why is so unpopular on the west coast.

PS : I have a good friend that lives in LA and said that even down there it is not followed as much as Football, Basketball and Baseball ... yet when he lived in Buffalo, NY it was the main thing people talked about. Guess it is a whole west coast east coast thing.

    Just weird
