Battery Powered Pets

This is about our pets, and their influence on us. I'll get to the battery part.

Animals as pets weren't always a feature among humans. Before the middle ages, dogs were used for hunting or guarding. they were utilitarian, like pigs or cows. The phenomanon of pets that people love is a fairly recent one. I would suggest thst pets serve a useful purpose to their owners. I remember reading of an experiment with prisoners being allowed to have pets. It reduced some of them from hardened to almost childlike. People undergoing dental work felt reduced pain if they were allowed to pet a pet. Course, that's not very hygeinic.

Some of us may think that our pets actually love us. That that could be true, but there is more to it. When we give them love, they store it up and reflect it back to us. That's the battery part i was referring to in the title. They seem to absorb some of out negativity and anger as well. With these characteristics, they are a moderating influence on their owners, a type of therapy, an improvement on civilization. Do you agree, or partly agree?

It's interesting that witches were portayed as have cat pets, a familiar. Witches were just a bit ahead of the curve.

I agree that pets are therepeutic. But you're wrong on the 'witches' being ahead of the curve. Egyptians actually worshipped cats. Not sure here, but I think the cats were believed to be part of/messengers from the netherworld - death.

I've personally got two dogs and two cats sharing my home. My big guy, Diego, is pictured under my nick. I don't know what I would've done without these great fuzzies around me. Dogs are excellent at giving unconditional love, as are 'some' cats.

The pets we normally take into our homes are social critters. Dogs have a structured heirarchy in the pack - from Alpha to Omega. So when we adopt the critter, we become the new pack, and how we act is how they will view our position in the pack. Since we feed them, teach them, we become the Alpha - or leader, and they'll always (try to) treat the leader with respect. Some in the family will be playmates. One of my dogs will play with my daughter, but won't play in the same manner with me. (to my sadness)

Science aside - I will never be without a dog. You can talk to them and they 'act' interested. They're full of affection and love to snuggle. (they're also warm and fuzzy)

We have alot to learn from these so called 'lower' creatures. And their expressions and antics always allow for a great floor show - free of charge!

I was talking about european civilazation from say, the time of the roman empire, since that is basically where todays culture in north/south america, europe, australia, and a few other places mainly developed from.

I'm glad i have a cat. It has been a step in my therapy, since i don't have anybody else.

SS - I'm glad you have a cat. My lil tiger is named Beaster and he is beating the odds. Over half a year ago I had his grave dug and the date set to put him down. We went in to say our good byes and there he was, jumping up on the counter and being himself. All he was given was fluids to hold him the night. He has feline lukemia, but you wouldn't know it. He's been with me for over a decade and is very much my guardian angel. At night he gets as close to my face as I'll let him - then reaches his paws up for me to hold, and we fall asleep that way.

I don't have anyone to turn to in my area either - so I am extremely thankful for my two dogs and two cats. Each of them has taught me a great deal.

    What's your kitty's name?

I have many names for her. Kitty cat or fuzzy are the most used.

BTW, the reason i have noone is because i let noone get too close.

    Hi Mimilly,

I love your photo of Diego - what a handsome cur! ...and I mean that in the best possible way.

I'm going to make a crazy suggestion -

Try this out on the dog that won't play with you - get on the floor on all fours, extend your arms toward the dog, and shake your butt back and forth. That's how canines ask each other to play. You might get an odd reaction from the dog at first - a friend of mine who tried this said the dog kind of did a "WTF?" double take, but then was doing the happy dance, ready to play. I guess the dog didn't know my friend was bi-lingual.

Try it - the worst that could happen is that your picture will appear in Sunday papers around the world.

Nathan Natas - Oh he'll play with me! No probs with him at all. It's my 7 year old husky/german sheperd cross, Tjiske (Chiska). She'll chase me and what not, but with my youngest daughter she'll do this snarl thing that is incredibly cute - and she won't do that with me.

We get Diego going all the time with the dog's playstance - and it generally has instant results. He's a goof - but always ready for fun. Tjiske wants to play - but she's a runner. Totally amazing to watch her rip around the yard or a field. She'll also go after a ball - but then hides it. Diego brings it back.. lol. They are quite the pair and offer a free show daily here.

    Definitely good for the spirits!

Saint Satan - I'm not good at letting people close to me either. I've lost too many people in my life, so it's hard. I'm glad you have fuzzy/kitty cat.

    Animals are absolutely WONDERFUL!

Here is a picture of my dog Rufus. I don't consider him a pet...he is my friend. I know it sounds cliche, but there really are no words to express how much he has done for me. I love him, and all of the other beautiful creatures out there.. Animals are just...the BEST!

Yes it's a known fact that animals are theraputic. I could not live without them. I have one little 12 month old Shih Tzu. What an incredible little dog, she is my baby. She is also so sensitive to my feelings. She will instantly detect if I am upset about something and desperately try to get to my face to lick it, her way of sympathising, so cute.
